Yesterday, fans were treated to a surprise trailer for10 Cloverfield Lane, which many have speculated is a sequel to the 2008 hitCloverfield. There is still very little we know about the story, but since both10 Cloverfield LaneandCloverfieldwere produced byJ.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, many assume there is some sort of connection between the two. Earlier today, aReddituser cleared the air about this mysterious project, revealing that it may not be a direct sequel, but it is set in the sameCloverfielduniverse.
“This film was originally made under the names Valencia and The Cellar for Paramount’s Insurge division (a subsidiary for films made for under 5 million dollars likeThe Devil Inside), and when Paramount closed it down, this movie (shot and completed) was thrown out to the wind and orphaned. Paramount bought it back up and had Daniel Casey andDamien Chazelledo some re-writes so that it would connect to theCloverfielduniverse and they went back and did reshoots and add-ons in March 2015 in New Orleans and L.A. This is a cash grab by Paramount so that they could make some quick bucks off of this film (which probably wouldn’t have made a lot of money in its original non-Cloverfieldincarnation). They are trying to spin this into something its really not. The budget is only 5 million dollars and they are releasing it in IMAX to make a little extra dough. Also take into account that no one from the originalCloverfieldis working on this (aside fromJ.J. Abrams, who was really just responsible for pitching the first movie to Paramount) and the original film was very muchDrew GoddardandMatt Reeves' vision.”

This new movie starsJohn Goodman,Mary Elizabeth Winsteadand the somewhat lesser knownJohn Gallagher Jr., and doesn’t feature any of the originalCloverfieldstars such asLizzy Caplan,Jessica Lucas, Michael Stahl-David,Mike Vogel,Odette AnnableandT.J. Miller. The other major difference fromCloverfieldis this movie has eschewed thefound footageformat. Here’s what directorJ.J. Abramshad to say about this project.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Much like the originaltrailerforCloverfield, the first look at10 Cloverfield Lanecame completely out of the blue. The firstCloverfieldfootage didn’t even have a title when it was attached toTransformersback in 2007. Thankfully, this trailer actually revealed the title, but there is still so much we don’t know about this project. Hitfix’sDrew McWeenyalso chimed in with new details about the project through his Twitter page.
“Just imagine this is a shot at creating Bad Robot’s anthology banner. “If it says Cloverfield on it, you can expect twists and wild ideas.”
