In Hollywood, no one can stop sequels, and this is especially true of the iconicAlienfranchise, which already boasts a total of seven movies (nine if you include theAlien/Predatorcrossovers) since the series began way back in 1979. And it sounds like there is even more to come, withAliencreator and Oscar-nominated filmmakerRidley Scottreportedly all set to return to the franchise and helm another installment.
At least, that is what it sounds like, according to a new report byTHR. In an in-depth reflection on his years working with studio 20th Century, the report reveals that Scott is now “developing a newAlienmovie for 20th in the wake ofRomulus’ success, plus a Battle of Britainfilm being written by Joe Penhall, as well as the previously announced thriller Bomb from Kevin McMullin.”

While this certainly sounds like Scott is indeed returning to direct anotherAlienmovie, likely a follow-up and finale to his newest trilogy which is so far comprised ofPrometheusandAlien: Covenant, is it possible that this could be the filmmaker referring to the recently announcedAlien: Romulussequel, which Scott will once again produce? Here’s hoping it’s the latter as, while bothPrometheusandAlien: Covenanthave their detractors, the idea of Scott continuing the story of Michael Fassbender’s nefarious android David and further expanding theAlienlore isan undeniably exciting prospect.
An Alien: Romulus Sequel Is Now in the Works
In the interview, Scott expresses his regret over not owning theAlienfranchise like “Spielberg did withJurassic” and “James Cameron has done with what he has.” However, Scott Free president and COO Justin Alvarado Brown did offer assurance that Scott will be involved in the director’s legacy titles, saying, “It would make no sense that another movie is made without Ridley and us.” This will include the upcomingsequel to this year’s hit prequelAlien: Romulus, which introduced audiences to a whole new gang of young and downtrodden space colonists who encounter the dreaded star beast while scavenging a derelict space station. The Romulus sequel is now in development, with 20th Century Studios Executive Steve Asbell revealing that they are eyeing director Fede Álvarez to return.
“We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t closed our deal with Fede [Álvarez], but we’re going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, “Wow, where do people want to see them go next?” We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I feel in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”

New Alien vs. Predator Movie Gets a Surprising Tease From Studio Exec
The previous attempts to bring the Alien and Predator franchises together did not end well, but could that change in the near future?
Speaking of Ridley Scott sequels, the director will next return to the Roman Empire for the next chapter in theGladiatorsaga. Picking up years after the first sword-and-sandals outing,Gladiator 2follows Lucius, who must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. While it took more than two decades forGladiator 2, audiences won’t bewaiting as long forGladiator 3, which is now in development.
