Sony Pictures Entertainment is taking its 2010 hit action-thrillerSaltand turning it into a newTV series, joining a slew of movie-to-TV adaptations that are already on the air, or in various stages of development.Screen Dailyreports that the studio is pitching the project to broadcasters and co-production partners at the European Film Market, which runs in conjunction with the Berlin Film Festival. Diego Suárez, senior vice president of international television production at SPE, had this to say in a brief statement about theSaltTV series.
“We want to bring it to Europe in a completely different way.”
It isn’t known if this project is specifically catered to European broadcasters, or if there are plans to air it in the United States. The site reports that Diego Suárez joined Sony in September, where he is developing local and international TV around the world. The executive said that he was tasked with increasing the amount of non-US programming that the studio deficit finances internationally, so it’s possible that it may not be developed forU.S. audiencesat this time.

When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Theoriginal movieearned $118.3 million domestically and $293.5 million worldwide, from a $110 million budget. This report doesn’t specify if the show has any writers on board at this time, or who would direct the pilot. It’s possible that originalSaltdirectorPhillip Noycecould return to take the helm of thepilot episode, since he has recently directed the pilot episodes for Crisis andRevengein recent years. He is also one of the directors for the upcomingRoots, a newminiseriesdebuting on A&E this May.
If Salt is ordered to series, it will become just the latest in a growing number of movies that have been adapted for the small screen.Limitlessis currently in its first season on CBS, while Fox’sMinority Reportwrapped up its first season late last year. CBS is also airing midseason showsUncle BuckandRush Hourlater this year, while the network is also developing a show based onTraining Day.
