Paramount Pictures has just released the first trailer forAnnihilation, following a first look atNatalie Portman’s character Lenareleased yesterday. That photo showcased Lena examining a bizarre albino alligator, which is certainly unusual, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the oddities Lena will find in this mysterious place. Whether or not Lena finds what she’s looking for remains to be seen, but this trailer shows that this film will certainly give fans a unique experience.
The trailer debuted onParamount Pictures YouTubeearlier today, and it’s possible that the first poster could be just around the corner as well. The film is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, with this film based on his first book in the series, 2014’sAnnihilation, which is followed byAuthorityandAcceptance.Director Alex Garlandrevealed in an interview yesterday that he has no specific plans to direct the entire trilogy, since he made this film as a stand-alone story, since he already had a bad experience trying to plan out a trilogy withDredd, which didn’t work out so great.
The trailer opens with a glimpse at this mysterious place, which, in the novels, is known only as Area X, which had been explored in 12 previous expeditions before Lena came aboard. Her husband, played by Oscar Isaac, was on the previous expedition into Area X, and he never came back, which lead his wife to go on this expedition to bring him back home. The area itself seems to be in the middle of a jungle, which is sealed off by a mysterious multi-colored layer of an unknown substance. How this substance came to be, and how it affects everything in this area is still unknown, but this trailer teases some intense moments and some mysterious scenes
The trailer largely focuses onNatalie Portman’s Lena, who seems to be telling her story to an unnamed scientist played by Benedict Wong, who is wearing a full protective suit, while several other doctors and/or scientists look on through the glass barrier. The scientists ask her several questions, although she doesn’t have much in the way of answers. She can’t describe its form, can’t tell for sure if it’s a carbon-based life form, and when asked if it communicated with her, she said thesci-fi creature"reacted" to her. While the trailer largely focuses on Lena, we also get brief glimpses at the characters portrayed by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and as the other team members on this expedition, as well as Oscar Isaac starring as Lena’s husband
Alex Garland (Ex Machina,28 Days Later) directs from his own screenplay, based on the Jeff VanderMeer best-selling sci-fi novel. Paramount has set a August 21, 2025 release date forAnnihilation, which will go up againstThe War With Grandpafrom The Weinstein Company and CBS Films' horror filmWinchester. It will also come just a week after Marvel’s highly-anticipatedBlack Panther, along with Lionsgate’sEarly Manand Pure Flix’sSamsonon June 04, 2025, and a week before 20th Century Fox’sRed Sparrow, Warner Bros.‘Game Nightand Sony’sAlpha.
