With just over 10 months left untilAquamanhits theaters in December, there have recently been rumors about the first trailer, which were debunked by director James Wan. Now another rumor has taken its place. This rumor, however, has nothing to do with the trailer, but rather revolves around an intriguing plot detail that, if proven true, will represent quite a big change from the comics in regards to two important characters, King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) and Mera (Amber Heard). There will be potential SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.
While these details have yet to be confirmed, a Twitter user known as Aquaman Shrine has revealed that, in this DCEU movie,King Nereuswill actually be the father of Mera. This is essentially the opposite of the relationship they have in the comics, where Nereus was part of an exiled group of Ataleans known as the Xebels. Nereus was head of the Xebels' military faction, and as tradition dictated, he was set to marry the king’s royal daughter Mera, after her father had passed. This didn’t exactly happen in the comics, though, withMerafalling for Aquaman/Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) after being sent on a mission to kill Arthur. This news was revealed by Dolph Lundgren, in a new interview. He says this.
“It is good to be king. Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along withAmber Heard, who plays my daughter. She’s trying to convince me to join the right side. Then you have Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother. We’re trying to avoid war between the surface dwells and the people of Atlantis.”
Dolph Lundgren would’t divulge any , but he does give fans quite a bit to chew on when it comes to this story. If Nereus is Mera’s father, that would surely mean that this movie won’t be a direct adaptation of the comics story. In the comics, after Mera falls for Aquaman, Nereus starts a campaign to take thethrone of Atlantis, enlisting the help of Arthur’s half-brother, Orm the Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson). While this story could still be told for the big screen, the motivation for Nereus to do so will have to be changed, if he is her father instead of her husband-to-be.
This comes just a week after another rumor surfaced that Jason Momoa will eventually be wearing the iconic green and orangeAquamancostume at some point in the movie, but that, like all of the otherAquamanrumors, have not yet been confirmed. Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and Dolph Lundgren are part of a talented ensemble cast that also includes Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother, Queen Atlanna, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry and Ludi Lin as Murk. James Wan directs from a script by Will Beall, based on a story by James Wan and Geoff Johns. You can head on over to theLas Vegas Review Journalfor their full interview with Dolph Lundgren.
