This new footage does not skimp on the action, and for folks who want to end their year with an action-packed bang,Assassin’s Creedwill most certainly fill the bill when it arrives in theaters December 21. While we’ll have to wait and see how it performs at the box office, video game movies haven’t traditionally performed well, and this particular movie will have a slew of competition.

Assassin’s Creedhas been given a December 21 release date, where it will go up against Sony’s sci-fi thrillerPassengersand Universal’s animated comedy Sing. It also opens five days before the highly-anticipatedStar Warsspin-offRogue One: A Star Wars Story, which some are predicting will earn upwards of $130 million, while going up against Warner Bros.‘Collateral Beauty. 20th Century Fox will also release the comedyWhy Him?on December 23 with Paramount’sFencesopening on Christmas Day. It remains to be seen if thisvideo game adaptationwill be able to find its footing in such a crowded field.

The movie is based on the wildly popular video game franchise, which, as of last summer, has sold over 93 million copies, becoming Ubisoft’s best-selling video game franchise ever.

Earlier this year, we reported that the production’s death-defyingLeap of Faithstunt set a new world record. StuntmanDamien Walters’ free fall from 125 feet was the highest leap in over 35 years. Production wrapped in January, so we aren’t exactly sure when this record-breaking leap took place. DirectorJustin Kurzelexplained in a video taken from the set that he wanted to ground this video game adaptation in reality as much as possible. ProducerPatrick Crowley, reveals that, normally, with a stunt as big as the Leap of Faith, it would be a digital character taking the leap. However, since stuntmanDamien Waltersis said to be “the best,” they did this stunt for real. To prepare for this stunt, stuntmanDamien Waltersfirst jumped from 70 feet, and then from 90 feet, before the record breaking jump of 125 feet. During the jump,Damien Walterswas falling at 61.1 miles per hour upon impact with the large inflatable mat.

Earlier this year, Universal’sWarcraftbecame the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, earning $433.5 million worldwide, although it only took in $47.2 million domestically.Assassin’s Creedhas a shot to become only the third video game movie ever to crack $100 million at thedomestic box office, following 2001’sLara Croft: Tomb Raiderand this year’sThe Angry Birds Movie($107.5 million).
