“Sk8er Boi” took the punk scene by storm back in 2002 when it first came out, garnering Avril Lavigne the title of the generation’s pop-punk princess. Released as the second single from her debut album, “Let Go,” the song immediately became a commercial success. In addition, “Sk8er Boi” also got Lavigne nominated for a Grammy for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance” but unfortunately lost it to Sheryl Crow’s “Steve McQueen.” Alongside the song, the music video also gained critical acclaim as well by being voted one of the best music videos of the decade by BT TV. Now 20 years later, Lavigne revealed that she is turning her most acclaimed song into a feature film.
As a guest onShe Is The Voicepodcast this past week, the singer said she wants to do something big for the song’s 20th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than by adapting the song into a film? Lavigne also mentioned that the song is her most favorite to perform to this day.
“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me,” she explained on the podcast. “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”
Written by Lavigne at the age of 16, the song tells the story of a boy in high school who gets rejected by the pretty popular girl because he was a skater. In the music video, Lavigne and her bandmates are seen singing on the roof of their cars having a concert before the police and a helicopter come in to break the crowd. In her interview, the singer reflected on her journey with the song and what it meant to her while writing it.
“You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps, and jocks,” she said. “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love and it’s like the skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s like too cool for him, but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”
According toMetro, this isn’t the first time “Sk8er Boi” has had rumors about being adapted into a movie. Back in 2003,Paramount Picturesannounced the plan to turn the hit single into a film, however, it was never made.
Avril Lavigne herself has recently gotten back into the pop-punk music scene as well, releasing a song in November titled “Bite Me," featuring Blink-182 singer Travis Barker. She then announced her 2022 tour, an upcoming 7th album, and her collaboration withWillow Smith. Lavigne is called the pop-punk princess for a reason and we can’t wait to see one of the most iconic songs of the early 2000s finally come to life.
