(Warning! This story does containSPOILERS!) There were quite a few moments inBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicethat left fans scratching their head. Perhaps none more so than thecameoappearance made byThe Flash, played in the DCEU byEzra Miller. There have been many questions about what this cameo actually means, and how it plays into the wider universe just beginning to be explored here. WillBarry Allen’s quick moment in the sun be explained in a future movie? Perhaps.
At least that’s the idea, says producerDeborah Snyder. The scene in question hasThe Flashshowing up inBruce Wayne’s vision of the future. Barry Allen comes to warn Batman of future events via an unstable portal. Some viewers weren’t sure if this was just a dream sequence. Or if this actually occurred. While she’s not answering either way, the producer did tellCollidermore about the importance of the scene. And that it was always envisioned to connect to a future movie set within theDCEU. PerhapsJustice League Part 1. She promises there will be a payoff. She explains.
“As we started then we worked on our script, I think we were in the middle of shooting and we started working on the outline for the next movie and where they go, and Zack said, ‘Oh my God let’s add this moment that is gonna pay off down the road, and we’ll find out more information.'”
There’s no telling if this moment will actually serve a purpose. Or if we’ll see a payback. Often times, moments like these will be filmed only to find their way on the cutting room floor, and it doesn’t sound like The Flash’s cameo was originally conceived as part of the story. Even ifZack Snyderdoes give us an answer in Justice League Part 1, if it’s not part of the bigger story, it’s yet another moment that may only work within the confines of an extended cut. That’s certainly what is happening with quite a few deleted scenes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which we won’t get to see until this July when the Ultimate R-rated version hits Blu-ray and DVD.
This cameo does give us a few hints aboutEzra Miller’sThe Flash. This version of Barry Allen will be fully introduced inJustice League Part 1, which starts shooting in just a few days. Barry will be using his super speed to time travel, which is something we’ve seen him do in both the DC Comics and the currentThe FlashTV show airing on The CW.
Some rumors claim thatJustice League Part 1may pull pieces from the popular 80s DC comic book arc Crisis on Infinite Earths. That plot revolved around multiple timelines on multiple Earths, and could be a way to incorporate the small screen universe along with what is happening in the DCEU movies. Of course, none of that has ever been confirmed. But it would help define and establish this moment with the Flash that doesn’t quite make sense just yet. It’s not yet clear how far in advanced the entire DCEU story is fleshed out, or how all the upcoming movies will eventually connect. But this sounds like a step in the right direction. Maybe.
