Marvel has released a new Blu-ray trailer for the global sensationBlack Panther, which reveals that fans will be able to bring this box office blockbuster home on Digital HD May 8, and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD and On-Demand formats a week later on May 15. The trailer doesn’t offer any new footage, but it showcases some of the movie’s most pivotal moments, along with a few moments of levity, includingM’Baku(Winston Duke) and his now infamous “vegetarian” line. In addition to the trailer, we also have the cover art for the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD, along with the Target and Best Buy exclusive artwork.
While Marvel hasn’t released the full list of bonus features, the studio has revealed there will be a feature commentary track from director Ryan Coogler, along with deleted scenes, outtakes and a number of “making-of featurettes, which detail the Black Panther’s evolution, the remarkablewomen of Wakanda, the history of T’Challa’s proud nation and the cosmic origin and technical applications of vibranium.” Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t offer any glimpses at these bonus features, but with less than a month until it arrives on Digital HD, hopefully we’ll get a few behind-the-scenes sneak peeks between now and then.
Most expectedBlack Pantherto be just the latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s seemingly never-ending string of hits, but practically no one expected its impact to be so monumental.Black Pantherout-shined even the loftiest of box office expectations, opening to a three-day total of $202 million and a four-day President’s Day weekend holiday haul of $242.1 million. It has gone on to earn $665.3 million domestic and $1.3 million worldwide. It hasrecently passed Titanic as the third highest-grossing movie of all time, although it seems unlikely that it will passAvatarfor second place with $760.5 million.
Black Pantherwas a huge hit with critics, earning an astounding 97% on Rotten Tomatoes at this time, but it had started out at 100% with the first wave of reviews. The movie has become acultural sensation, and among the most balanced movies the MCU has put out. The $665.3 million domestic haul was almost exactly paired with the $634.5 million international haul, with the domestic take representing 51.8% of its global haul, with the international take coming in much higher than many expected.
Black Pantheris still in the top 10 in its eighth weekend, after debuting in the top spot for five weekends in a row, the first time that had happened sinceAvatardebuted in December 2009. While it has yet to be confirmed, Marvel will most likelygreen light a sequel in the near future, especially since it has become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time. TheBlack PantherBlu-ray release will also come just a few weeks after the release ofAvengers: Infinity Waron April 27.
