Oprah was stunned that Bassett didn’t win the awardback at the 2023 Oscars ceremony, but she thought the actress handled the loss well. The image of Bassett’s face in that moment of her defeat flooded the internet afterward, which showed an actress on the verge of tears as presenter Ariana DeBose read Jamie Lee Curtis' name aloud as the actual winner. Bassett also told Oprah during the same sit-down:

“I thought I handled it very well, also. And that was my intention to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So, I thought, ‘Yes, I was disappointed.’ And I handled it like a human being.”
