While fans still have a few weeks left untilCaptain America: Civil Warhits theaters on May 6, Marvel and Disney are gearing up for the film’s big Hollywoodpremiereon April 12. Earlier today, Marvel sent out a media alert revealing which cast members would be attending the premiere, and it included two actors who had not been previously announced forCaptain America: Civil War,Jim RashandAlfre Woodard. While it isn’t known exactly what characters they’re playing,Alfre Woodard’s presence could hint that this movie may crossover into the studio’s Netflix TV shows.
Back in September, Marvel announced thatAlfre Woodardhas signed on to playMariah Dillardon the upcoming Netflix seriesLuke Cage, which debuts on September 30. We don’t know for sure ifAlfre Woodardis playing Mariah Dillard inCaptain America: Civil War, but sinceLuke Cageis set within theMarvel Cinematic Universe, it seems likely she’ll play the same character in both projects. It is worth noting, though, thatCaptain America: Civil Warwrappedproductionback in August, a month beforeAlfre Woodard’s announcement as Mariah Dillard, but it’s possible her deal was set long before the September announcement, or she came aboard during reshoots.
InLuke Cage, Mariah Dillard is a local Harlem politician, and cousin to Cornell"Cottonmouth" Stokes(Mahershala Ali), who is looking to bring a new era of change to the streets she grew up on. Her personal life and professional career are thrown into turmoil by both Harlem’s newest hero Luke Cage as well as her cousin Cottonmouth’s nefarious acts. In the comics, there is a character named Black Mariah, but her last name was never revealed, so it isn’t quite clear if Mariah Dillard is Black Mariah yet, especially since Mariah Dillard is a politician trying to clean up the streets, and Black Mariah was the leader of a notorious street gang.
Nothing was revealed aboutJim Rash’s character either, but it seems that directorsAnthony RussoandJoe Russoare continuing a tradition of bringing actors from the hit sitcomCommunity(which they executive produced) in to the MCU. InCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, the filmmakers brought inDanny Pudifor a surprise cameo as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Since the directors will also be makingAvengers: Infinity War Part IandAvengers: Infinity War - Part II, don’t be surprised if they have moreCommunitycameos up their sleeve.
Marvel also used a similar media alert for the red carpet premiere ofAvengers: Age of Ultronto reveal that previously-unannounced actressesLinda CardelliniandJulie Delpyhad surprise roles in the film.Linda Cardelliniportrayed Laura Barton, the wife ofJeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye, withJulie Delpyplaying the mysterious Madame B, who trained Natasha Romanoff in the Black Widow program. Stay tuned for more onCaptain America: Civil Waras we get closer to the Hollywood premiere on April 12.
