A few weeks ago, the streaming service Netflix held a massive press event in New York City where they unveiled new TV shows that will be unveiled later this year. One of those was aCastlevania animated seriesthat hailed fromAdventure TimeproducerFrank Seibertalong with indie producerAdi Shankar. While no release date has been set,Adi Shankarrecently took to social media to reveal the first poster showing the massive castle that will be at the heart of this show.
Adi Shankardebuted the poster onFacebook, although it doesn’t give us much besides a glimpse at the castle. The streaming service hasn’t announced any voice cast members yet, butAdi Shankarrecently confirmed through social media that Part 1 will debut sometime this year and the second part will arrive in 2018. He also promised fans that it will become the “Western world’s first good video game adaptation” while adding that comic book legendWarren Elliswrote both the first and second seasons.

The series was originally announced back in August 2015, but at the time, it hadn’t found a home with Netflix yet. Then in December 2016, producerFrank Seibertmentioned in an interview that he was trying to develop an animated series based on an iconic video game, which most fans guessed wasCastlevaniasince his studio has long held the rights to the game.Adi Shankarlater confirmed that it was the same project he announced in 2015.
The original Castlevaniavideo gamewas released in Japan in 1986, before debuting on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. The game followed Simon Belmont, a descendant of the Belmont clan, a family of vampire hunters, who journeys to Dracula’s demonic castle, Castlevania. Adi Shankar confirmed in 2015 that the mini-series will be based on the third game in the series, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, which introduced three new characters, a sorceress named Sypha Belnades, the pirate Grant Danasty, and Alucard, the son of Dracula who could shoot fireballs and turn into a bat.
Shortly after announcing this series on Facebook,Adi Shankarproclaimed that, “the goal is to bring hard hitting anime to America,” adding that he wanted this show to become “America’s firstanimated seriesfor adults.” He added that the show would be inspired by classic anime shows such asAkira,Ghost in the Shell,Ninja ScrollandYoung Justice. While the producer’s statements about the show have certainly been bold, the Netflix streaming service does sound like a perfect fit for a show like this, since they can push the envelope farther than they could on a traditional broadcast network. While we wait for more on thisCastlevaniaseries, take a look at the new poster below.
