Neil Gaiman had a pretty good reaction to a Christian protest group’s petition to have Netflix cancel Good Omens. The miniseries actually streams on Amazon, but Gaiman and his fans aren’t in a rush to make any corrections. As for Netflix and Amazon, the streaming platforms are also having a bit of fun with the situation, resulting in some more laughs forGood Omensfans. Earlier this week, a petition was launched to cancel the series and it has gained over 35,000 signatures as of this writing.
Christian group, Return to Order, launched a petition forNetflixto cancelGood Omensover the “blasphemous” material. One fan alertedNeil Gaiman, who co-wrote the source material and every episode of the miniseries, and the author said, “This is so beautiful… Promise me you won’t tell them?” Gaiman co-wrote the 1990 book with Terry Pratchett and they had planned on bringing it to the screen for a number of years before it ended up happening. Pratchett sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 66.
Return to Order saysGood Omensis, “Another step to make satanism appear normal, light and acceptable” and that it “mocks God’s wisdom.” The group has also taken issue with a female portraying the voice of God. In the miniseries, Frances McDormand takes on the voice and a lot of Christians are not happy about the decision. Return to Order went on and had this to say.
“This type of video makes light ofTruth, Error, Good and Evil, and destroys the barriers of horror that society still has for the devil.”
Netflix responded by saying, “Ok, we promise not to make anymore.“Amazonhilariously responded by saying, “Hey Netflix, we’ll cancelStranger Thingsif you cancelGood Omens.” Since the initial petition started to gain attention all over the world, Return to Order was alerted to their mistake and have since edited their petition. “Due to an oversight by Return to Order staff, this petition originally listed Netflix as responsible for the offensive seriesGood Omens. Amazon Video released the series on May 31. We regret the mistake, and the protests will be delivered to Amazon when the campaign is complete.”
Amazon will be receiving Return to Order’s petition when all is said and done. However, thanks in part to the petition, the show has been getting a lot of attention and rave reviews. When it comes down to it, fans have been waiting to see a screen adaptation for what seems like forever, so it’s really not going anywhere, no matter how many people come out and sign an online petition.
