The 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California, on the evening of Thursday, Mar. 30. A night of celebration for many in the LGBTQIA+ community; other than cursory speeches about the importance of being atransgenderally (especially in this political climate), the annual GLAAD Awards missed the mark on true allyship, snubbing much of trans-media nominated for entertainment that centered on cis queer voices. But singer and actressChristina Aguileraknocked it out of the park.

The GLAAD Media Awards each year honors “fair, accurate and inclusive representation of LGBTQ individuals and issues.” Hosted by comedian and actress Margaret Cho, the March ceremony revealed the winners of 15 of this year’s 33 categories. The remaining winners for select categories will be announced at GLAAD’s annual New York Ceremony on Saturday, May 13. Television showsWhat We Do in the Shadows,A League of Their Own,The White Lotus, and the filmBroswere among the evening’s recipients.

GLAAD presented the following awards from six categories onstage:

“Special award winners last night included Christina Aguilera, who received the Advocate for Change Award, introduced by Club Q shooting survivor, Michael Anderson; Bad Bunny, who accepted the Vanguard Award, presented by Ricky Martin; and Jeremy Pope, recipient of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award presented by Gabrielle Union,” reportedDeadline, whose reporter was in attendance at Thursday’s presentation.

Accepting her award, Aguilera said, in part, “I have a big problem with injustice, particularly towards the trans community that has faced so much hardship. So I always hoped I could use my music to speak up for others who didn’t have a voice. That’s why I am so grateful to GLAAD for this award, and for the work you do to get the LGBTQ community heard.”

The following day, on Mar. 31’sTrans Day of Visibility, Aguilera posted on social media that the real hero wasn’t her but the survivor of the Club Q shooting who presented her award. The singer wrote on Instagram, “On #TransDayofVisibility we celebrate the invaluable contributions of every individual in the transgender community. As someone who believes in equality and inclusion for all, I am deeply grateful to GLAAD for amplifying the voices of those who are often marginalized.”

She continued, “Michael, your words of inspiration mean the world to me, but I must say that you are the true embodiment of bravery. To endure violence and then choose to take action to effect change is nothing short of heroic.”
