The ending ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewill be talked about by fans for quite some time, especially since it raises so many questions aboutJustice League Part 1, which startsproductionon April 11 in the U.K. During a new interview withCollider, directorZack Snyderrevealed that he consulted with executive producer andThe Dark Knighttrilogy directorChristopher Nolanon the final scenes. There will be SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.
Previously released footage forBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicegave us our first look at the massiveDoomsday, who was created byLex Luthor(Jesse Eisenberg) from the Kryptonian DNA taken from the corpse of General Zod (Michael Shannon). During the climactic battle where Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) take on Doomsday, Superman takes the Kryptonite-laced spear and drives it through Doomsday’s heart, which also weakens Superman at the same time. When he is stabbed through the chest with one of Doomsday’s spikes, Superman is killed, borrowing a story line from the iconic 1992comic book"The Death of Superman." Here’s what the director had to say about consulting withChristopher Nolanon this important scene.
“It was pretty early, and [Christopher] Nolan and I had long conversation about it, a really great, sort of philosophical conversation about it. He was really cool because he played an amazing devil’s advocate about why not to do it, and then in the end was like, ‘No you’re right, it’s better to do it.’ The studio was like, ‘What?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah but, how about I called the movie Dawn of Justice?’, and they’re like ‘Okay, okay, I like what you’re doing, I see what you’re doing.'”
Of course, even thoughSupermanmay have died at the end ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he certainly won’t stay dead for too long. The final shot of the movie showed the dirt on Superman’s coffin start to levitate, teasing he’ll come back to life inJustice League Part 1.Zack Snyderalso revealed earlier today that Batman will be putting together theJustice Leaguehimself, in the wake of Superman’s death, revealing that he thought it was important for Superman to die so he can truly evolve.
“I thought for the evolution of Superman’s character, there’s a crucible that he has to go through to really embrace his humanity or find what is the ultimate thing about being human? The ultimate thing you face is your mortality, and that’s a thing that I think is really cool about this. I’m gonna say this: the second you do the first part of it, the death and resurrection are the same thing in a weird way. You have to know. The reason I wanted to do it the way we did it is because I don’t want the audience completely off the hook with it. They still have to go like, ‘What the [frick]? Are you kidding me?’. There’s a way to signal towards a more definitive resurrection concept, but I didn’t wanna do that because I want that to be real for them when they see it, I want the experience to be real and then the sort of need to be real later on. Suffice it to say there is a plan, but that’s gonna be-you need to wait and see.”
Production begins April 11 onJustice League Part 1, and we don’t know how large or small a roleHenry Cavillwill have in that movie, following Superman’s death.
