Variety also revealed that a source close to Washington said his participation inCrimson Tide 2is script-dependent, but with no finished screenplay yet, fans will just have to wait and see. With the deaths ofGene Hackman(earlier this year, in February), the original directorTony Scott, and one of the film’s writers, Robert Towne, there will be obvious changes since the film was released 30 years ago. Bruckheimer added that he does not know if he’ll ever replicate the film’s impeccable writing.

Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide

“We had Tony Scott, a phenomenal director. We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne, two of the greatest writers and directors, writing on that movie. … I don’t know if I’ll ever replicate that kind of writing for a film.”

Crimson Tidefollows the clashbetween the seasoned commanding officer of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine, Franklin “Frank” Ramsey (Gene Hackman), and his new executive officer, Ronald “Ron” Hunter (Denzel Washington). Their issues arose from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles during a period of political turmoil in Russia. Ultranationalists threatened to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan, and with Ramsey and Hunter being total opposites (Ramsey being headstrong and Hunter being more analytical), the men eventually had to answer for their actions. It’s inspired by a real incident during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
