Given the popularity of superhero movies, it isn’t hard to imagine that most in-demand actors have at least thought about which comic book character they would like to tackle, given the chance. It turns out thatHarry PotterstarDaniel Radcliffehas indeed given that idea some thought. As it turns out, the actor feels he would have made a pretty goodSpider-Manat one point, but admits that ship has sailed.
Daniel Radclifferecently spoke withMetro.co.ukwhile out promoting his latest movieSwiss Army Man. As is often the case with actors in interviews these days, the subject of superheroes came up, and he revealed that he not only wanted to play everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, but he feels he would have been pretty good at it. Here is what he had to say.
“I love superhero movies. I would’ve been a good Spider-Man but the boat has sailed on that and I’m very happy to watch Tom Holland do it. He’s fantastic. "
Most of the world seems to share his sentiments aboutTom Holland. There was quite a bit of hesitation when it was announced thatAndrew Garfieldwas being replaced and that we were going to be getting our third actor playing Spidey in a live-action movie within ten years. Granted, everyone was excited about the prospect ofPeter Parkerjoining up withThe Avengersin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, andTom Hollandwound up being an excellent Spider-Man by most accounts. His appearance inCaptain America: Civil Warwas one of the clear highlights, so even ifDaniel Radcliffedesperately wanted to take on the role, he would have to wait awhile, and by then he will have likely aged out of it. Not only that, but the actor also expressed some hesitation about signing on for another lengthy franchise.
Since theHarry Potterseries concluded, whichDaniel Radcliffespent most of his young life working on, he has found a lot of success in smaller, indie movies, be it playing a “farting corpse” inSwiss Army Man, or being a guy with Horns in the movieHorns. He does show up in the occasional big-budget movie these days. Over the summer he had a part inNow You See Me 2and last year Igor inVictor Frankenstein, which turned out to be something of a bomb, but was at least intended to have mass appeal. But the idea of a superhero movie definitely isn’t out of the question entirely.
Given his star power, it would be surprising ifDaniel Radcliffehasn’t already been approached at some point to star in acomic book movie. While he might have made a fine Spider-Man at one point, not only has that moment in time passed, but that would require the type of franchise commitment that he seems uninterested in making. However, that does leave plenty of room for him to play a villain as opposed to a hero. Many of the bad guys in these movies are one-and-done, so that is an option. Perhaps he could play Arcade, a villain who uses elaborate traps and games to try and kill his victims, who was at one point an enemy ofSpideyand has also squared off againstThe Avengersin the comics. That is merely a suggestion, but at least we know that the possibility exists forDaniel Radcliffeto appear in a superhero movie at some point, even if he won’t ever get to play Peter Parker.
