Next year marks the 20th Anniversary of directorDanny Boyle’s breakout hitTrainspotting, and if all goes according to plan, fans may be able to celebrate that beloved film with the release ofTrainspotting 2.Danny Boylerevealed earlier this month that the sequel will in fact be his next film, but today, during a newinterview, the filmmaker revealed that he plans to start production next summer, and that he plans to release the follow-up later that year. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say below.
“It’s May and June next year we shoot and we’ve got a terrific script. We’ve got the four main actors all eager and willing to do it. I’m very happy because my only (concern) was that the script would be good for two of them and not so great for the other two, and they’d feel obliged to come back but they’ve all got good stuff, and it’s a very interesting look at them again. Hopefully, we can get it finished in time to release it in 2016 which is the 20th Anniversary year, so yes, we’re on it, and it’s looking good.”

Scheduling has been an issue for this follow-up in the past, sinceJonny Lee Millerstars in the CBS dramaElementaryandRobert Carlylestars on ABC’s fantasy adventure series Once Upon a Time. Withshootingscheduled to start next summer, that meansDanny Boylewill be taking advantage of both stars' summer hiatus' from their respective shows.
The sequel was originally set to be called Porno, based on author Irvine Welsh’s 2002 sequel novel of the same name, but the director confirmed that his follow-up won’t actually be titledPorno. The filmmaker wouldn’t confirm the official title yet, but he did joke about borrowing the title from another well-knownsequel. Here’s what he had to say about the potential title.
“No, we’re going to try and call T2 but there might be some issues there withJames Cameron. I’ll have to beg and we’ll have to go toJames Cameronand say ‘What do you think?'”
Original Trainspotting writer John Hodge is coming back to write the sequel, and while it will not be called Porno, the story will still be adapted from the sequel novel. The story finds the four main characters who cross paths together in the pornography industry. It isn’t known how long principal photography will last, but if the director plans on releasing the sequel by the end of 2016, to capitalize on Trainspotting, it may be a rushed production and post-production process.
