Last week, Netflix released their highly-anticipatedCastlevania anime series, which was based on the iconic video gameCastlevania III. The series was produced by Adi Shankar, who has gained quite the following online for his Bootleg Universe shorts, and for producing films likeThe Grey,DreddandLone Survivor, although it seems he wants to tackle another hit Nintendo video game for his next project. When asked if there were any other video games he would like to adapt, the producer did not hesitate, during a recent interview. Here’s what he had to say below.
“DarkMetroidin the same anime style.”
Netflix has alreadyrenewed Castlevaniafor an expanded second season, which will span eight episodes, twice as many as the four-episode first season. The producer has also revealed that he is working on anAssassin’s Creedanime series for Ubisoft, which may also find a home at Netflix, but as forMetroid, it isn’t known if this is something he is actively pursuing, or if it’s just something he’d like to make, one day. Unfortunately, the producer didn’t shed any more light on his plans for a “dark"Metroidanime series in his interview withNintendo Life, so it remains to be seen whether or not this will actually happen.
It is worth noting that the originalMetroidvideo game was one of the 30 games that were included in theNES Classicthat was one of the hottest-selling items last year. Nintendo has also announced plans to release a new SNES Classic, which will include 21 of the most popular Super Nintendo games, includingSuper Metroid. With the popularity of these new consoles, it could be possible that it helps spawn aMetroidanime series, but we’ll have to wait and see if Adi Shankar can pull it off or not. It will be interesting to see if this moves forward, especially since aMetroidmovie adaptation fell apart several years ago.
Way back in 2004, director John Woo signed on to direct aMetroidmovie, but it never got off the ground. Producer Brad Foxhoven revealed in a 2012 interview thatNintendowas actually supportive of the idea, although they were still ultimately cautious after the colossal flop of the 1993Super Mario Brosmovie, with the producer stating that their collaboration was “limited” with the video game company. Now, with theCastlevaniaseries a big hit for Netflix, and rumors of aLegend of Zelda live-action series, it’s possible that aMetroidseries could actually work.
The originalMetroidvideo game followed bounty hunter Samus Aran, who protects the galaxy from Space Pirates while they try to harness the power of the eponymous Metroids. The original game was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986, which spawned a total of 15 more games, includingMetroid: Samus Returnsfor the Nintendo 3DS, which was released last month, and the upcomingMetroid Prime 4, which is being developed for the new console Nintendo Switch. Adi Shankar is also producing a new TV series entitledAdi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets, along with movies such as theI Saw the Devilremake andBodied. Hopefully we’ll get more on this potential Metroid Animated Series in the near future.
