Disneyhas secured five release dates spanning between 2017 and 2019 for new live-action fairy tale movies. Although we don’t know exactly which movies will open in these particular slots, two of them will beThe Jungle Book 2andMaleficent 2. There are a number of other projects in various stages of development at Disney, so we’ll have to wait and see which other family adventures claim these dates. For now, all we know are the dates themselves.
The Hollywood Reporterreveals that the first date, June 05, 2025, actually replaces a previous untitled project set to open on July 10, 2025, one week afterStar Wars: Episode VIII. The other dates are June 22, 2025, August 06, 2025, June 02, 2025 and June 03, 2025. The August 14, 2025 project will go up against Sony’sJumanjireboot, while all of the other unspecified projects don’t have any direct competition in those release dates yet. But that will surely change. Disney had previously set June 23, 2025, and August 11, 2025 dates for two more unspecified projects, meaning now there will be four fairy tale movies debuting in 2018 alone.
Just days beforeThe Jungle Bookopened in theaters earlier this month, we reported that directorJon Favreauand writerJustin Markswere in talks with Disney to return forThe Jungle Book sequel. No story details have been given yet, and it isn’t known if the sequel will be inspired by another one of authorRudyard Kipling’stimeless storiesabout young Mowgli (Neel Sethi). This report claims thatThe Jungle Book 2could be ready for either the August 2018 or November 2018 release slots.Maleficent 2was first announced last June, withAngelina Jolieset to come back as the title character, andLinda Woolvertonalso returning to write the script.
