Disney is continuing their growing tradition of turning some of their animated classics into live-action movies, by putting a newSnow White projectinto development. ScreenwriterErin Cressida Wilsonis in talks to write the screenplay for, which is said to expand both the story and the music from the original Disney cartoon. No director is attached as of yet, but the project already has songwriters lined up for the new music.
The Hollywood Reporterreports thatBenj PasekandJustin Paulhave been attached to write the new music. They most recently wrote the songs for directorDamien Chazelle’s upcoming musicalLa La Land, which starsRyan GoslingandEmma Stone. No details have been given as to how this production will update this story from the originalanimated fairy tale.

The originalSnow White and the Seven Dwarfswas released by Disney in 1937, based on the Grimm brothersfairy taleand still considered to be one of the greatest animated movies of all time. There have been a number of different adaptations ofSnow Whitethroughout the years, including two live-action adaptations that debuted in 2012,Snow White and the HuntsmanandMirror, Mirror.Snow White and the Huntsmanspawned the sequelThe Huntsman: Winter’s War, which hit theaters this spring and did not featureKristen Stewart’s Snow White character.
We also reported in March that Disney is developing another live-action project entitledRose Red, which followSnow White’s sister. This story reveals thatRose RedisSnow White’s estranged sister, with the story set after Snow takes a bite from the poisonous apple and falls into her “Sleeping Death” towards the end of the original story.Rose Redthen sets off on a journey with the seven dwarfs to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life. The project was originally written byJustin Merz, withEvan Daugherty(Snow White and the Huntsman) writing a new take on the script that is said to be more of a “companion piece” to the original movie.
Disney has found much success lately with its live-actionfairy tale adaptationssuch asMaleficent,Cinderellaand this year’sThe Jungle Book. The studio’s next live-action fairy tale project isBeauty and the Beast, starringEmma Watson, which is set to open March 17. The studio is also developing a slew of other high-profile projects likeTim Burton’sDumbo, a new live-action version ofMulan.The Jungle BookdirectorJon Favreauis also directing a live action version ofThe Lion King, withGuy Ritchieattached to direct a live-actionAladdin. Hopefully we’ll find out more about this newSnow Whitesoon.
