Disney has released the first trailer forChristopher Robin, the upcoming live-action take onWinnie the Pooh. The honey-loving bear and his friends have been a beloved fixture of the Disney brand for a very long time, but this is truly going to be a different take on the world that Pooh and his pals inhabit. Not only are we going to see Pooh and his adult friend all grown up, but this is a live-action take on the material, which will be a new thing for moviegoers. Now, we have our first taste of what this is going to look like.
Disney’sChristopher Robin, which is described as a heartwarming live-action adventure, centers on the man that the movie is named after. That man, however, was once the young boy who loved embarking on adventures in theHundred Acre Woodwith a band of spirited and lovable animals. Unfortunately, he’s grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends, including Winnie the Pooh, to venture into our world and helpChristopher Robinremember the loving and playful boy who is still inside.
This is far from the first time that Pooh bear and his pals have made their way to the big screen. Most recently was 2011’sWinnie the Poohanimated feature, which was met with mostly very positive reviews from critics, but didn’t manage to bring in all that much money at the box office. There’s also 1977’s classic,The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, 2003’sPiglet’s Big Movieand 2005’sThe Tigger Movie, which performed the best at the box office. However, none of the movies have been huge hits. Though, that may chance withChristopher Robin, given Disney’s recent track record at the box office. Specifically, with their live-action takes on classic properties.
Disney has had tremendous success remaking and reimagining some of their animated classics, with movies likeCinderella,Maleficent,Alice in Wonderland,The Jungle BookandBeauty and the Beastdominating at the box office. However,Christopher Robinisn’t an actual remake, so it may not be expected to do quite as much business as something likeBeauty and the Beast. Still, Disney has proved that they know how to churn out a hit in recent years and there’s no reason to think thatChristopher Robinis going to be any different. As long as the movie turns out good, this should be another money maker for the Mouse House.
Marc Forster (World War Z,Finding Neverland) directsChristopher Robin, which is set for release on August 3.
