Despite announcing plans for aPrincess and the Frogseries, titledTiana, back in 2020, Disney has pulled the plug on the animated follow-up. In addition, Walt Disney Animation is scrapping all development plans for content on Disney+. Walt Disney Animation joins Pixar Animation, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm as divisions of the Walt Disney Company that are focusing less on streaming projects and reinvesting their energy in theatrical films, a far cry from where the studio was just five years ago.
The Hollywood Reporterrevealed that plans forTianahave now been scrapped entirely, along with a planned feature-length film for Disney+ which had not been announced. A spokesperson for Disney confirmed there would be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio due to this shift from developing original content for Disney+ to focusing on feature film animation. Sources close toTianatoldThe Hollywood Reporterthat despite their best efforts to save the series, including several changes to the creative team, the series ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs.

‘X-Men ‘97’ Gets Season 2 Release Update…But It Is Not What Fans Wanted to Hear
‘X-Men ‘97’ has been given a Season 2 update from Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum, but not one that fans wanted to hear.
Tianawas first announced on Disney Investor Day in 2020 as a continuation of the hit 2009 filmThe Princess and the Frog, with Anika Noni Rose set to reprise her role as Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess.Tianawas announced alongside a slew of other Disney+ series that would continue their popular films, includingThe Big Hero 6sequel seriesBaymax, which aired on Jul 05, 2025, andZootopia+, which aired on Aug 08, 2025. The other major project announced alongsideBaymax, Zootopia+,andTianawasaMoanaseries, which was reworked intoMoana 2.

The Streaming Gold Rush is Ending
One might have assumed that Disney would have recutTianainto a feature film as they had withMoana 2, seeing how that investment paid off for Disney. With Disneyland having just completed a massiverenovation of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the idea of making aPrincess and the Frogsequel seems like a no-brainer. Despite being a beloved modern Disney film,The Princess and the Frog’s box office in 2009 was seen as a moderate hit by some and disappointing by others. In other words, it wasn’t as much of a sure bet at the box office asMoana 2was. But Disney is not done withThe Princess and the Frogas the studio is reportedly working on a separate short-form-inspired special based on the movie, likely a short that will play in theaters in front of another animated release.
Walt Disney Animation’s decision to no longer focus on making material for Disney+ truly brings an end to the previous era set forth by Bob Chapek during his short tenure as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company. Despite Disney Investor Day 2020 hinting at Disney’s future being in streaming, the various divisions of Disney have started to pull back production in the years since. After two series,Pixar is now no longer making original series for Disney+. After five years of theStar Warsseries, the franchise is scaling back its streaming slate, with the only confirmed titles beingAndorSeason 2 andAhsokaSeason 2.Marvel just hit pause on three live-action seriesand is now rethinking its approach to streaming as being more longform series instead of miniseries with strong narrative ties to feature films. It seems the streaming gold rush is coming to an end.
