Doctor Strange 2may finally kick off production next year according to star Benedict Wong. Though, it may be coming with some changes behind the scenes. At present, the Sorcerer Supreme is going on something of a streak. While the character and some of his counterparts have appeared in several movies, includingAvengers: Endgame, since 2016’s Doctor Strange, another solo movie has yet to see the light of day. By the time one does roll around, it will probably be the longest gap between solo installments ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fortunately, it seems as though those wheels are finally turning.
Benedict Wongwho plays Master of the Mystic Arts Wong in the MCU, was recently asked about the sequel in an interview. While a previous report indicated that the movie could arrive as early as next year, according to the actor, the movie will likely shoot next year, which means we would probably see it in theaters in 2021. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I know they’ve now got a writer on board who I met at the Endgame premiere, so I think that may be happening some time next year.”
The interesting bit there has to do with the writer. Scott Derrickson directed Doctor Strange and is reportedly set to return to helm the follow-up. His creative partner and friendC. Robert Cargillpenned the screenplay. It was expected that he would return, given his relationship with Derrickson. However, as Benedict Wong teases here, there may be a new writer on board. Is this someone who is co-writing the script with Cargill? Or has Marvel Studios decided to bring on someone new entirely? For now, there are precious few answers, but it adds an interesting wrinkle.
TheMCU slate beyond Avengers: Endgameremains largely mysterious. It was recently revealed by Disney that eight Marvel movies have been given release dates on June 04, 2025, July 27, 2025, July 17, 2025, June 03, 2025, June 09, 2025, Aug 08, 2025, July 22, 2025, and August 01, 2025. None of the titles have been revealed, but we know theBlack Widowmovies likeBlack Panther 2,Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,The EternalsandShang-Chi. It’s just not clear precisely when each one of those respective movies will arrive. Since the first Doctor Strange was released in November, rather successfully, that November 2021 date would be a good guess for the sequel.
Outside of Benedict Wong,Benedict Cumberbatch will be back as Stephen Strange. It’s also expected that Rachel McAdams will be back as Christine Palmer, in addition to Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo. Hopefully, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Co. decided to reveal some official details regarding the upcoming MCU slate in the near future. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details on the project are made available. This news was previously reported byLRM Online.
