The best-selling video gameElden Ringis now officially getting a film adaptation, and the ambitious project has been acquired by one of the most prominent movie studios working today. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the FromSoftware title followed an epic fantasy tale that was created with the help ofGame of ThronesauthorGeorge R. R. Martin. Now, A24 has confirmed that the film is in development, and filmmaker Alex Garland will be writing and helming the movie.

MovieWeb discovered earlier this month thatA24was developing anElden Ringmovie, but at the time our sources were unable to confirm Garland’s involvement. A rumor at the time stated that Garland was “in talks” to direct the film adaptation. A24 is doubling down on the video game movie business as they are also developingaDeath Strandingfilm based on the Hideo Kojima franchisefromPigdirector Michael Sarnoski. Peter Rice is set to produceElden Ringalongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.

‘Until Dawn’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Reveals If Horror Video Game Adaptation Survives the Night

Is the video game adaptation a hit with critics so far?

In 2024, during an interview withThe Guardian, Miyazaki addressed the possibility of bringing the world ofElden Ringinto another medium. He confirmed that FromSoftware did not have the means necessary to make a film adaptation. However, he revealed that he had no reason to prevent the project from happening, only that a “very strong partner” would have to be involved in some way. It seems A24 has become that special collaborator. His words below:

Malenia in Elden Ring

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”

George R. R. Martin Already Hinted at an ‘Elden Ring’ Film Before

Earlier this year, George R. R. Martinseemingly revealedthat anElden Ringmovie was in discussions. “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out ofElden Ring,” Martin told IGN. However, he did not divulge which studio was working on the project, or if a filmmaker was attached to direct or write the film. Martin himself may be involved in some capacity. After all, he remains a close contributor to the ongoingGame of Thronesspin-offs on HBO, despite his constant critiques of how the network is handling them. That said, in this case, Martin was not the sole writer behindElden Ringand only contributed to the worldbuilding aspects of the video game.

Elden Ringis a fantasy action video game with a massive scale like no other. As the player, they are tasked with claiming the Elden Ring as the Tarnished, the name given to those who have lost the grace of the magical Erdtree, located in the Lands Between. Standing in their way are royal gods and powerful warriors that also seek to take the reins of a broken kingdom. To a certain extent, it’sGame of Thronesmixed withThe Lord of the Rings, but on steroids. Check out the spellbinding plot synopsis for the video game, which does a good job of illustrating the high-concept nature ofElden Ring.

“In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered.

Marika’s offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will.

And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring.”
