There are many TV shows that have spawned movies, fromThe X Filesto The Simpsons, but one that has been rumored for many years without ever making an appearance isFamily Guy. The Seth MacFarlane-created animated sitcom is coming to the end of its 21st season, and shows no signs of stopping yet. When it comes to making a transition to the big screen though, it may not make that kind of leap anytime soon.

While speaking recently withEmmy Magazine,Family Guyproducers Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel explained that there are two main reasons why a movie version of the popular comedy is not currently feasible. While Seth MacFarlane has been said to be working on ideas foraFamily Guymoviefor almost a decade, his other projects are one of the main reasons we have not seen the Griffins hit the big screen yet. As Appel said:

Seth MacFarlane as Commander Ed Mercer in The Orville

“We haven’t made a movie yet because Seth [MacFarlane] will be an active part of that, starting with the script. And right now, between the Ted TV series and book club, he just doesn’t have the time.”

The other reason thatFamily Guyhas not been rushed out is seemingly because it is hard to work out which movies will and won’t work. As Sulkin said, in an honest appraisal of another MacFarlane movie franchise, “Movies are hit and miss. For everyTed, there’s aTed 2.” Of course, that franchise is about to head to the small screen and is just one of the projects that is currently taking up MacFarlane’s time.

Seth MacFarlane Has Been Behind Many Successful Shows and Movies

As well as being the mind, and voice, behindFamily GuyandTed, Seth MacFarlane has been the mastermind of a number of other movie and TV projects. This includes popular sci-fi seriesThe Orville, which list year finally unveiled its third season but has yet to have a fourth green-lit. Talking about that series, MacFarlane previously said:

“There’s some trickiness [in making another season]. But, look, the actors are the easy part. [The trickier part is,] ‘How do I work it into everything else that’s now going on?’ I will say that I get as emotionally invested in the show as any of the fans, so I will find a way to do it if there is a Season 4.”

As well as the potential fourth season ofThe Orville, MacFarlane is currently working ontheTedseries for Peacock, which sees him returning as the voice of the foul-mouthed living teddy bear, and recently was revealed to be working on an adaptation of the graphic novel series,The Shrouded College. With all of these projects potentially taking up his time, it is not surprising that MacFarlane has not been able to think too much about developing a movie version ofFamily Guy. Of course,Family Guyhas already done some longer stories on the small screen, particular theirStar Warsparody episodes, which raises the question of whether we need aFamily Guymovie at all even if MacFarlane does find a gap in his schedule.
