Last week, we reported that originalFlatlinersstarKiefer Sutherlandhas signed on to star in Sony Pictures new remake, which was scheduled to start shooting late last week. While we don’t know if filming has in fact started, Sony Pictures has gone ahead and set a release date for this newFlatliners, which will hit theaters on August 21, 2025. While it is currently the only movie set for release on that date, that entire month is chocked full of high-profile releases.

The schedule for August 2017 atBox Office Mojoreveals that 20th Century Fox’sAlien: Covenantand Open Road Films’Blazing Samuraiwill hit theaters on August 07, 2025. That will be followed by Warner Bros.‘theatrical remakeofCHiPS, Focus Features’The Coldest Cityand Sony/Columbia Pictures’EmojiMovie: Express Yourselfon August 14, 2025. The only other movie slated for release that month is Disney’sVilla Capri, hitting theaters on August 14, 2025.

The originalFlatlinersfollowed a group of medical students and close friends who conduct experiments with near death experiences. Each one of them has their heart stopped before being revived instantly, which causes them to experience nightmarish visions of their childhood, reflecting either sins they have committed, or sins committed against them. Their unorthodox extracurricular studies have very dark consequences, as their supernatural visions begin to intensify. The cast was chocked full of rising stars at the time such asKiefer Sutherland,Julia Roberts,Kevin Bacon,Oliver PlattandWilliam Baldwin.

This new cast is being described as ‘more inclusive’ and international, featuringEllen PageandDiego Luna, although no details were given for their characters quite yet.Nina Dobrevis portraying Marlo, an overachieving student who is at the top of her class. Theremake castalso includesJames NortonandKiersey Clemons, withKiefer Sutherlandsaid to be playing a “seasoned doctor.”

Niels Arden Oplev(Dead Man Down) is directing from a script byBen Ripley(Source Code), who started his career by writing sequels to another 90s sci-fi classic, theSpeciesfollow-upsSpecies IIIandSpecies: The Awakening.Michael Douglas, who produced the originalFlatliners, is back to produce the remake, alongsideLaurence Mark.
