It’s been a long time coming, but fans of thehorrorgenre can finally start gearing up for the official return of the beloved franchiseFriday the 13th.Instead of a revival with a feature film, the iconic slasher universe—mostly centered around masked killer Jason Vorhees—will return in a new format. A TV prequel titledCrystal Lake, produced by A24 for Peacock, and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (who also worked on theItprequel,Welcome to Derry) has now begun to tease fans with a new set photo.

Thus,Friday the 13thfranchise will return to the small screen. Yes, we meant to say “return,” as there was aFriday the 13thTV series in the late ’80s, but it didn’t feature Jason or any characters from the film series.Crystal Lakewill depict the events before 1980sFriday the 13th. In the original movie, Pamela Vorhees went on a rampage and killed the campers because she believed they were just as negligent as those who let her son Jason drown years before. There is no release date confirmed forCrystal Lakeas the series is still in early pre-production. However, Brad Caleb Kane hasonce again used Instagramto give fans an exciting update, which you can check out below.

Friday the 13th: Every Movie in the Horror Franchise, Ranked by Rotten Tomatoes

Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake. This is how Rotten Tomatoes ranks the films of the horror franchise Friday the 13th.

TheFriday the 13thfranchise is one of the most iconic in horror history. It all started in 1980, when screenwriter Victor Miller and producer/director Sean S. Cunningham teamed up to make the film that would contribute to the foundation of the slasher genre – especially in the 1980s when horror movies were mostly copycats of the “teens in peril” formula.Friday the 13theventually morphed into a franchise that refused to end, although in the mid-2010s, right as ideas for a sequel were being discussed, theFriday the 13thIP became part of a long legal battle.

Rising From Development Hell: How ‘Crystal Lake’ Will Give New Life to the Iconic Slasher Franchise

The photo in question does not reveal much, only showing an empty set with construction workers minding their business. However, Kane has marked something in the upper part of the image. The wood panel has something written on it. It says “PAM LIVING RM.” Should we assume that it means “Pamela Vorhees' Living Room”? This would make sense, asthe only confirmed cast member is Linda Cardellini, who will play the role of Pamela Vorhees, played by Betsy Palmer in the original film.

Although the idea of seeing Jason Vorhees again sounds exciting, it’s still too early to know if the iconic slasher killer will make an appearance in the series. After all, these legal issues ended when Miller and Cunningham ended up with different rights toFriday the 13th. Miller, who’s executive producing the show, can use anything from his original script. The 1980 movie didn’t feature Jason, the killer with the hockey mask, wielding a machete. This version of Jason was the ghostly boy who had drowned, and who emerged in the final dream sequence, a.k.a. one of the most iconic jump scares in horror history.

Cunningham, on the other hand, does have the rights to the hockey-mask sporting Jason Vorhees we all know. But his involvement in the series hasn’t been confirmed (he has talked about the series and offered updates in the past, but for now, he’s not directly involved). Reportedly, the prequelCrystal Lakewill be based on Miller’s material, meaning that the series is unlikely tofeature the masked killer. The question is, can A24 and Kane make an appealingFriday the 13thseries without Jason?
