We’re not sure that will ever happen, but directorJ.J. Abramsdoes confirm that we’ll see agay Star Wars characteron the big screen soon enough. Though, he doesn’t reveal if this is being planned forStar Wars: Episode VIII,Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyor one of the many upcoming spinoffs. With a Star Wars movie coming every year for eternity, it makes sense that the franchise would eventually introduce every race, creed, color and sexual persuasion as held within the framework of a family friendly movie.
Star Wars: The Force Awakensis being called the most progressive chapter in the live-action series to date. It has pulled in more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office, and it did that with a female and a black character in the leads. Future sequels will continue the trend of diversity. And when asked by theDaily Beastif a homosexual character will be arriving in this galaxy anytime soon,J.J. Abramsanswered enthusiastically.
“Of course! When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course. I would love it. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
Even though we haven’t been introduced to any gay characters in a live-action Star Wars movie,J.J. Abramsdoesn’t believe the universe could exist without them. The first official gay Star Wars character was introduced last year in the novel Lords of the Sith. Flawed Imperial officialMoff Morsis a lesbian. This novel takes place after the events seen inStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, so it’s unlikely that Moff Mors will make her way to the big screen unless it’s in one of the spinoffs, which is not beyond the realm of possibility.
Amidst the #OscarsSoWhite controversy,J.J. Abramshas been more vocal about taking action in the name of diversity. And while he is not set to return as director for any of the upcoming Star Wars movies currently in pre-production, he does have say as a producer. About the issues currently facing Hollywood, he says this.
“I think we all have a hell of a lot to do, and I think it is insane to me that we still have to have a conversation about inclusivity. It’s shameful. We all need to do better to represent this world. It’s something that is important to me, and is something that we’re focusing on at [production company] Bad Robot.”
Some believe thatStar Wars: The Force Awakensalready introduced the movie universe’s first gay character in Poe Dameron. But Disney and LucasFilm have never confirmed that to be true.
