Back in 2008, Warner Bros. pulled the plug on directorGeorge Miller’sJustice League: Mortal, largely due to the Writer’s Guild of America strike, and it never actually saw the light of day, despite the full cast already on board and production about to start, when the writer’s strike hit. Today, directorRyan Unicomband producersAaron CaterandSteven Caldwellannounced that they are making a documentary about the failed project, which will give, “an unbiased account of the project’s development, preproduction and cancellation, as well as the impact on the Australian film industry.” Here’s what the director had to say about the documentary, which will be tentatively titledMiller’s Justice League Mortal.
“We wanted to get the story out there to help us to gauge interest. I have always been fascinated with project, which would be in the same vein as 2013’sJodorowsky’s Duneand this year’sThe Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, about a Superman movie thatTim Burtonwas to direct in the 1990s.”
Before Warner Bros. pulled the plug, theJustice League: Mortalcast was set to includeArmie Hammer(Batman),D.J. Cotrona(Superman), Megan Gale (Wonder Woman),Adam Brody(The Flash),Common(Green Lantern), Santiago Cabrera (Aquaman),Teresa Palmer(Talia Al Ghul),Zoe Kazan(Iris Allen), Hugh Keays-Byrne (Martian Manhunter) andJay Baruchel(Maxwell Lord). The project was being developed at the same time asChristopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, andGeorge Millerwas reportedly not pleased that the studios were developing two different versions of Batman at the same time. When the writer’s strike hit, the director wanted to shoot the film in either Canada or New Zealand, but that never happened.
Ryan Unicombhas secured private investors for funding this documentary, although he added that he may use a crowd-sourcing platform like Kickstarter or IndieGogo to augment the budget. The director has not yet approachedGeorge Milleror his producing partner Doug Mitchell yet, and it would be hard to imagine this project moving forward if they don’t agree to appear in the documentary, so we’ll have to wait and see if that happens or not.
