One of the biggest surprises this year for anyone who enjoys Marvel TV is thatAgents of S.H.I.E.L.Ddecided to bring on the character of Ghost Rider, as portrayed byGabriel Luna. This is not the more classic Johnny Blaze version ofGhost Ridermind you, but a more recent version by the name ofRobbie Reyes. The reception has been very positive, so that has led to discussion of the character possibly getting his own series. Or maybe even a movie.
In a recent interview withComicbook.com,Gabriel Lunarevealed that there actually have been talks about possibly giving hisGhost Rider charactera spinoff of some kind. It is unclear if that would also be on ABC or if he would join up withThe Defendersover on Netflix, but he made it clear the possibility is very much alive. Here is what he had to say.
“It’s been talked about, there’s definitely deals in place for that potential. But I just take it one day at a time. I have so much fun now I just want to ensure I get these episodes right. If they throw more episodes on my plate, I will do my best to do well with those stories as well.”
This is not the first we have heard of a potentialGhost Riderseries, but this is probably a bit different than what most Marvel fans were expecting when the studio got the rights to the character back. There were rumors that Netflix was looking at developing shows forBlade,Moon KnightandGhost Riderbefore Robbie Reyes ever got nearAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was presumed at the time that we would be seeing Johnny Blaze at the forefront, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. However, a recent episode ofMarvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.seemed to tease Johnny Blaze as well, so who knows what is going to happen at this point. As for a movie?Gabriel Lunacommented on that briefly as well.
“I don’t have a preference. People talk about, ‘Ah man he’d be great as a feature,’ which is [an] idea, too…It could be in the cinema, it could live on Netflix, whatever it is.”
There are a lot of ways Marvel could go with it at this point. It seems like the character is destined for more than just a few appearances onAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D, especially given the warm reception from fans. Maybe Netflix could do a one-off movie explaining the origin of Robbie Reyes that featuresJohnny Blazeas well? The streaming service has been dabbling a lot more with original movies lately. No matter how it happens, ifGhost Riderwound up on Netflix, it would be a nice way for at least the TV side ofMarvel Universeto feel a bit more connected than it currently is. The movies feel like they live with the movies.Agents of S.H.I.E.L.Dfeels like it is on island all alone at the moment and Netflix is doing its own thing withThe Defenders.
Marvel has no shortage or projects on either the TV or movie side of things. Outside of the shows that are already up and running, aPunisherseries is currently being filmed for Netflix, aCloak & Daggerseries is in development and Hulu is currently adaptingThe Runaways. The movie side of things is tacked through 2020, so it is hard to fathom squeezing anythingGhost Riderrelated in at Marvel Studios, even if we ignore the separation that currently exists between the TV and movie divisions of Marvel.
Gabriel Lunamade it clear that talks have happened and that there are “deals in place” shouldGhost Riderbecome something worth exploring outside ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That said, Marvel probably has similar deals in place for absolutely anything that has potential, so that may not mean all that much. Still, moreGhost Riderprobably isn’t a bad thing and if the character continues to gain popularity, who knows?
