Maybe you thought it was over after that very questionable TV series, but no, theI Know What You Did Last Summerfranchise is back, and one of its original stars,Sarah Michelle Gellar, has now shared our first look behind the scenes of the slasher sequel. Gellar took toInstagramto post a picture from the set of the legacy sequel, and casually mentioned co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. and the director of the project, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. She also makes a joke that another legacy sequel is coming soon, saying, “Scooby Doo 3coming soon…. @realfreddieprinze @jennkaytin.”

The new sequel is still untitled, but per Gellar’s image on her Instagram account, it’s safe to say that it could go the route of othermodern legacy sequelslikeHalloweenandScream. The chair just says “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in the same typography used in 1997. The film is set for release next summer on August 10, 2025. Gellar is likely not returning as a cast member because her character, Helen Shivers, died in the first movie. However, her involvement is behind the camera, as Robinson is a close friend of hers, and probably required her presence when directing the film. Per Gellar’s confirmation about her role in the film:

“My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity. So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

So, no Helen this time, as the revival of the franchise is likely to largely center on anew group of characters. The newI Know What You Did Last Summermovie stars Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, aka Julie James in the original franchise, has also confirmedshe will returnfor the franchise revival alongside Freddie Prinze Jr., who will reprise his role as Ray Bronson. Per Hewitt’s remarks toParade magazine, she’s pushing towards more than just a cameo, and wants a big part in the film:

“If I’m going to come back 27 years later, I don’t want to just be in it for five seconds, like, I don’t want it to just be like that thing that’s like, ‘Oh, well, there’s the ghost of I Know What You Did past, here she is. So I want to be able to carve out time to really be in it for people and to have it matter. So we’re working on it. We’re so close. The announcement will be so exciting when it happens, for me as well, and I’m hoping it’s soon.”
