Charlotte Gainsbourg, who most recently starred in directorLars von Trier’s controversialNymphomaniac Volume IandNymphomaniac Volume II, is in negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox’s sci-fi action sequelIndependence Day 2. No details were given for her character, but if a deal is finalized, she will joinJessie Usher,Liam HemsworthandJeff Goldblum, who reprises his David Levinson role from 1996’sIndependence Day. WhileWill Smithis not returning as Air Force pilot Stephen Hiller for the follow-up, it is believed thatBill Pullmanwill be back as Thomas Whitmore.
We reported earlier this month thatJessie Usheris playing the son ofWill Smith’s Stephen Hiller, but in the originalIndependence Day, it was never revealed that Hiller had a son. His girlfriend, Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) did have a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), but Hiller was not the father. It’s possible thatJessie Usheris playing Dylan, but no further details were given for the character. It has also been rumored thatLiam Hemsworthis playing the son-in-law ofBill Pullman’s Thomas Whitmore, who was the President of the United States during the originalIndependence Day.
Roland Emmerichis directing from a screenplay that was most recently written by James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, who are also writing theStargatereboot for the director. The script was previously worked on by Carter Blanchard,Roland Emmerich,Dean DevlinandJames Vanderbilt. The director is also producing withDean Devlinand Harald Kloser, but it isn’t known when production may begin.
