Creature Commandoshas finally premiered on Max, which means the new DCU is officially here. The first two episodes are currently available to stream, as fans are introduced to what is essentially the new iteration ofThe Suicide Squad. The series stars Indira Varma, Alan Tudyk, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Zoe Chao, and Maria Bakalova. As well as the new heroes,Creature Commandosalso introduces a brand-new character. But,James Gunnhas already retconned them out of the DC Universe.

Speaking toIGN, Gunn and showrunner Dean Lorey reacted to the new character, and confirmed their future (or lack thereof) within the DC Universe. The opening credits feature a brief shot of an animated James Gunn working on a laptop. The writer/director/DC Studios co-president had no idea he had been animated into the show."‘Well, we gave all the characters sort of little moments,’ animated moments in the credits. And we were like, ‘James is kind of a character. We should give him something,'“Lorey said of Gunn’s inclusion in the opening credits. When Gunn himself was asked about the moment, his immediate reaction went as follows:

David Corenswet as Superman

“That’s not canon!”

Gunn promises that he didn’t know about the moment, and never asked to be animated in the credits.“I was surprised, and my ego was stroked, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Please don’t let people think that I told him to animate [me],'“Gunn continued. David Lorey said the team animated the moment in secret, and were incredibly nervous to present it to Gunn. Lorey explained:

“I can tell you for the record, he didn’t [ask to be animated], and we were thrilled to present it. And nervously, we presented a little bit.”

‘Creature Commandos’ is a Strong Start for the DC Universe

An animated show about a bunch of paranormal characters only die-hard DC Comics fans have heard of might seem like a strange starting block for a massive new cinematic franchise. Even James Gunn acknowledges it’s an odd place to start.Creature Commandoswas chosen as the first DCU project for the simple reason that it was written and ready to go before anything else. According to Gunn, the DCU properly kicks off with next year’sSuperman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.

But, despite some misgivings about its responsibility as a franchise starter,Creature Commandosis an incredibly strong debutfor the DCU. The new series has earned rave reviews from critics, currently boasting 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics have been privy to the entire season, fans have only watched the first two episodes. But that hasn’t stopped them rushing to RT to deliver their own, prejudicial, verdicts.Creature Commandosholds a slightly less impressive 79% audience score following the debut episodes.
