One of the most powerful performances in the repertoire of action iconJason Stathamis now gearing up to stream for free. Don’t worry, he punches plenty of people as well in between monologues about the merciless London elite. The Stath is now one of modern action cinema’s greatest heroes, with the actor and martial artist stretching both his dramatic muscles and his action ones in this tale of, you guessed it, a man with a mysterious pastout for revenge.
Written and directed bySteven Knight, who is best known for creating the hit crime drama seriesPeaky Blinders, the movie that’s now headed to free streaming is titledRedemption(also known asHummingbirdelsewhere), and finds The Stath leading as the mysterious Joey, a former special forces soldier who returns to London after a traumatic experience. Going AWOL, Joey now lives on the streets and drinks to both numb the painful memories and keep the killing machine he has become at bay. But when one of his friends is killed, Joey becomes a vigilante in an attempt to atone for his sins.

Director Behind Fan-Favorite Jason Statham Action Thriller Wants to Reunite (Will We Finally Get a Long-Awaited Sequel?)
In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Simon West reveals he’s sure he’ll work with Statham again.
Starring Agata Buzek, Christian Brassington, Vicky McClure, and Benedict Wong alongside Statham,Redemptionis all set to land on the free streaming platformTubifrom July 1. Despite Jason Statham’s obvious efforts and shift into the more dramaticalongside delivering one-liners(killing someone with a spoon is a personal favorite), Redemption was met with mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike at the time. The action thriller now stands at a green-splatted 49% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes alongside just 38% from audiences on the Popcornmeter.

However, while audiences may have been taken aback by Statham’s far more vulnerable performance, critics did heap praise on the action star’s abilities. “While it certainly has more on its mind than the average Jason Statham action thriller,Redemptiondoesn’t quite capitalize on its premise – or on its star’s strong, committed performance,” the critics’ consensus reads. So, despite mixed reviews, it remains a must-see for fans of the action icon.

“You know, it’s, it’s such a different, a different world, but it’s so much fun. It’s a classic that I think the only way I can describe it is, it’s like, you know, Jason Statham is so good at making exciting action films that feel extremely watchable and so it’s actually so much fun being a part of that world… I had a ball. I was there for like, a few, a few days. I was there for like, maybe a week, and, yeah, so much fun.”
