Joker: Folie à Deux, the long-awaited sequel to the acclaimed 2019 film that earned Joaquin Phoenix his first Academy Award after four nominations, hits theaters next year and promises to revolutionize the superhero genre.
After wowing audiences with a dark, gritty, and realistic origin movie centered on one of the world’s most popular villains, Todd Phillips wants to double it down by presenting a musical that will tell one of the most toxic and twisted love stories of all time.

Phoenix won’t be the only star ofJoker 2, as he’ll be joined by none other than Lady Gaga, and for a very good reason. Beyond the fact that the great star has demonstrated her acting skills in movies likeA Star is BornandHouse of Gucci, the main reason for choosing her as the actress behind the new Harley Quinn is that the new DC film will be a musical.
The choice of musical genre for the sequel has surprised fans, generating a lot of curiosity regarding the result. Zazie Beetz, who will return for the second part, has already stated that the filmwill not be what the audience imagines. And now, cinematographer Lawrence Sher provides new details on the movie.

The Famous Musical that Inspired Joker: Folie à Deux
In a recent interview withYouTuber Matti Haapoja, Sher revealed that Todd Phillips' project was primarily inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’sOne from the Heart, another popular musical.
Released in 1981, Coppola’s film follows Frannie and Hank, a couple living on the outskirts of Las Vegas, in a seemingly perfect relationship. However, the celebration of a new anniversary changes everything, and while they are going through a crisis they decide to end their relationship and seek new adventures while going their separate ways.
Frannie will be conquered by a pianist, who proposes that they run away together and hide from the rest of the world. Hank, for his part, falls for a circus performer. Living their new love affairs, the unexpected happens, and they meet again in Las Vegas.
One from the Heart starred Frederic Forrest as Hank, Teri Garr as Frannie, Raúl Juliá as Ray, Nastassja Kinski as Leila, Lainie Kazan as Maggie, and Harry Dean Stanton as Moe.
Joker: Folie à Deuxwill find both characters inside of Arkham Asylum, showing how they meet and eventually fall in love, to end up having a very dangerous relationship. The movie also stars Industry’s Harry Lawtey in a key role that hasn’t been confirmed yet, Get Out’s Catherine Keener, Maze Runner’s Jacob Lofland and Banshees of Inisherin’s Brendan Gleeson.
Just asThe Batman, which is also working on its sequel coming in 2025,Joker 2will remain as a part of theElseworldslabel from the new DCU, apart from the main canon that’s being developed by James Gunn but also apart from each other. The movie starring Robert Pattinson has already introduced its own version of the Joker, played by Eternals’ Barry Keoghan, but it hasn’t been confirmed if he will return for the second part.
