Jokerhas just added Golden Globe nominee to its growing list of accomplishments. The DC Comics adaptation from Warner Bros. and director Todd Phillips has been nominated for four Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture, in the drama category. This now adds awards season acclaim to the impressive box office haul and major film festival accolades.
Golden Globes 2020 Nominationsshow that In the Best Picture category,Jokerwill be competing against Sam Mendes' WWI epic1917, Noah Baumbach’s emotionalMarriage Story, Martin Scorsese’s gangster epicThe Irishman, and Fernando Meirelles' real-life dramaThe Two Popes. Amazingly, Netflix is behind three of those titles, all exceptJokerand1917, which is perhaps a preview of the streaming service dominance to come throughout awards season. The official Twitter account forJokerconfirmed the nominations with a brief clip of Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, with the following caption.
#Joker has been nominated for 4 #GoldenGlobes, including Best Picture, Drama, Best Director, Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor, Drama, and Best Original Score. Congrats to everyone involved! #GoldenGlobes"
One interesting item of note; The Best Motion Picture, Musical or ComedyGolden Globescategory included Quentin Tarantino’sOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood. It seems likely that, if Tarantino’s latest had been positioned as a drama (which it very easily could have been),Jokermight not have made the cut here. In any event, the DC Comics adaptation will be competing in several of the biggest categories at one of the biggest awards shows of the year.Joaquin Phoenixwill be competing against Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonia Banderas (Pain and Glory), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) and Christian Bale (Ford vs Ferrari) in the Best Actor category.
Todd Phillips, meanwhile, will be up against Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) and Sam Mendes (1917). In the Best Original Score category, Hildur Guonadottir’sJokersoundtrack is up against Thomas Newman (1917), Alexandre Desplat (Little Women), Randy Newman (Marriage Story) and Daniel Pemberton (Motherless Brooklyn). It was expected thatJokerwould be a favorite during the awards season circuit. It was first hinted at in a big way when the movie took home the top prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, which served as quite the surprise.
Jokerwas viewed as a major risk for Warner Bros. as it is anR-rated, gritty, non-traditional comic book movie. On a relatively low-budget, said to be in the $55 million range, the movie has grossed $1.05 billion at the box office and is now the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2019 overall. In all likelihood, the movie will end up landing some Oscar nominations as well, given that the Golden Globes are often a sign of what’s to come for Hollywood’s biggest night. With that in mind, every studio in town will surely be trying to emulate this success, but this feels like a lightning in a bottle situation. The 77th annualGolden Globesbroadcast is scheduled for January 5 on NBC.
