For the fourth weekend in a row, Universal’sbox officejuggernautJurassic Worldhas taken the top spot at the box office with an estimated $30.9 million.Jurassic Worldhas currently taken in $558.1 million domestically and $826.9 million internationally for a global take of $1.3 billion after just four weeks in theaters. The movie is currently the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time domestically, behindMarvel’s The Avengers' $623.3 million, and fifth highest-grossing movie globally, behindFurious 7’s $1.5 billion take.
Inside Outfinished in second place for the third weekend in a row, taking in $30.1 million. ThePixarmovie has taken in $246.1 million domestically and $363.4 million worldwide in its three weeks in release. Coming in third place is the new releaseTerminator Genisys, which took in $28.7 million over the three-day weekend, and $44.7 million since its release on Wednesday, July 1. The movie suffered from a rash of negativemovie reviews, amassing just a 27% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, andTerminator Genisysactually opened lower thanTerminator 2: Judgment Day,Terminator 3: Rise of the MachinesandTerminator Salvation.
Despite a positive reception (63% on Rotten Tomatoes), the weekend’s other new movie in wide release,Magic Mike XXL, faltered, opening in fourth place with just $11.6 million over the three-day weekend and $26.6 million since its July 1 opening. The sequel took in just $3,458 per-screen average, and it opened far lower thanMagic Mike’s $39.1 million opening back in 2012.Ted 2dropped to fifth place in its second weekend with $11 million, down a whopping 67.2% from its $33 million opening weekend. The comedy sequel has taken in $58.3 million so far, nearly half of the originalTed’s $119.8 million take after its first two weeks in release.
The top 10 was rounded out byMax($6.6 million),Spy$5.5 million,San Andreas($3 million), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl ($1.3 million) andDope$1 million. On the limited release front, A24’s documentaryAmy, which chronicles the life of late singerAmy Winehouse, debuted with an impressive $220,000 from just 6 theaters, for a whopping $37,000 per-screen average.Amywill expand in more theaters nationwide next weekend.Other films opening this weekend in limited release were Jimmy’s Hall ($22,000, $7,333 per-screen average) and Cartel Land ($17,000, $8,500 per-screen average).
