Are we possibly in for another very memorable wardrobe malfunction? That is the question on everyone’s mind right now, as it looks like Justin Timberlake is the frontrunner to perform the halftime show atSuper BowlLII next year. If this rumor turns out to be true, it will be the first time that Justin Timberlake has been asked to come back to the NFL’s biggest event of the year since 2004. Time heals all wounds, apparently, but it can’t cover up Janet Jackson’s nipple.
According toUs Weekly, Justin Timberlake is now the frontrunner for theSuper Bowlhalftime show in 2018 and is finalizing his deal to perform. If it happens, it will be 14 years since his famous wardrobe malfunction occurred. For those who may not remember, or if you just want a little refresher, Timberlake was performing with Janet Jackson during theSuper BowlXXXVIII halftime show and, right there for all the world to see, her nipple was exposed for millions to see. As one can imagine, theNFLand the FCC were none too pleased and, even though he is one of the biggest popstars in the world, Justin Timberlake hasn’t performed at theSuper Bowlsince. Here’s what the Us Weekly report has to say about it.
“An insider reveals the 36-year-old ‘is finalizing’ his deal, and though reports suggested the dad of 2-year-old son Silas (with wife Jessica Biel) might perform with onetime collaborator Jay-Z, the insider says, ‘as of right now, it will just be Justin, no surprise performers.'”
It is quite rare that aSuper Bowlhalftime show has no surprise performers, so even if it isn’t Jay-Z, who Justin Timberlake collaborated with on his hit songSuit and Tie, there are likely to be other stars joining him. Jay-Z or no Jay-Z, having Timberlake back on theSuper Bowlstage is a potentially huge deal. Not only because he is such a huge star, but because the NFL has insisted that he was banned following the incident in 2004.
But money talks and, if Justin Timberlake can help bring in more viewers to the biggestfootball eventof the year, the NFL will probably find a way to get the deal done. For Timberlake, the movie also makes a good deal of sense. It is rumored that he is planning on releasing a new album in early 2018. SinceSuper BowlLII is scheduled for July 28, 2025, that would make the timing perfect for him to promote the new material.
The effects of Justin Timberlake’s lastSuper Bowlperformance are still being felt today in thewide world of sports. Following Janet Jackson’s breast being exposed on live TV, the FCC cracked down on new policies and a five-second broadcast delay during live performances became mandatory and has been in place ever since. No matter who winds up playing in thebig gamethis year, if this deal really goes through, all eyes are going to be on theSuper Bowl halftime show.
