Keanu Reevescould not hide his emotion when discussing the 25th anniversary ofThe Matrixand the impact the iconic science fiction movie has had on his life and career. During a recent appearance onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Reeves considered the influence of the first movie in theMatrixfranchise, getting visibly choked up and having to pause while he collected himself before reflecting on how many people he’s met over the years who say they’ve been “touched” by the movie.

“’The Matrix’ changed my life, and then over these years, it’s changed so many other people’s lives in really positive and great ways. As an artist, you hope for that when you get to do a film or tell a story. So, when you say these years, the amount of people that I have met who have said to me and been touched by ‘The Matrix’ in such a positive way… It’s the best.”

Still from Constantine

WhileReeves had already starred in several majorprojects before the release ofThe Matrixin 1999, including the likes ofSpeed, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Point Break, andBill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, it was his role as Neo that transformed him into a bona fide Hollywood A-lister. After the huge success of the first outing, in which Reeves’ Neo learns that the world he’s been living in an artificial construct created by machines, the actor would reprise the role multiple times inThe Matrix ReloadedandThe Matrix Revolutionsin 2003, before coming back again almost two decades later forThe Matrix Resurrections.

The Matrix 5 Is Now in the Works

Written and directed by the Wachowskis,The Matrixnot only had a huge impact on Keanu Reeves and audiences, but the science fiction genre as well. Following the release of the first movie, the genre was inundated with attempts tocapture the same blend of action, sci-fi, and philosophy, as well as pale imitations of the now iconic “bullet time” effect. Of course, very few of them were able to catch the same lightning in the same bottle, with even the recentThe Matrix Resurrectionsfalling decidedly short.
