Syfy announced a Season 2 renewal for their hit seriesKryptontoday, coming just one day before the highly-anticipated Season 1 finale airs Wednesday, May 23 at 10 PM ET on Syfy. The cable network didn’t announce how many episodes will be in Season 2, but it’s possible that it could have the same 10-episode count as the first season. The renewal was likely an easy call for Syfy, given thatKryptonis one of the most-watched shows on the network.
Krypton, which tells theuntold Superman storybased on iconic DC Comics characters, has averaged 1.8 million viewers in the live plus 3 (L3) ratings category each week. Those numbers, which measure the live airing plus the VOD/DVR numbers for three days after the episode airs, represent the most-watched first season for any Syfy series sinceAscensionin 2014, and marks the most-watched season for any Syfy season sinceDefiancein 2015. While now exact premiere date for Season 2 has been given, the show is expected to return at some point in 2019.
TheKryptonseries takes place roughly 200 years before the birth of theMan of Steelhimself, Superman, a.k.a. Kal-El, and also two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet. The series follows Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), Superman’s grandfather, as a young man who is faced with a life and death conflict - save his home planet or let it be destroyed to restore the fate of his future grandson. The first season showcased how the leadership hierarchy onKryptonhas been left in disarray and the House of El ostracized, as Seg found himself in a difficult position. He must redeem his family’s honor and protect the ones he loves, while being challenged by familiar DC charactersBrainiacand Earthly time-travelerAdam Strange.
Cuffe leads a cast that also includes Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod, Elliot Cowan as Daron Vex, Ann Ogbomo as Primus Alura Zod, Rasmus Hardiker as Kem, Wallis Day as Nyssa Vex, Aaron Pierre as Dev-Em ad Ian McElhinney as Val-El. The supporting cast is rounded out by Blake Ritson as the iconic villain Brainiac, Hannah Waddingham as Jax-Ur, Paula Malcomson as Charys and Shaun Sipos as Adam Strange, the Earthling from Detroit who has become stranded onKryptonand becomes an unlikely mentor to Seg-El.
