When it comes to the Creepy Clairvoyant, Cassandra Webb, the rumor mill is still operating at full vigor. Dakota Johnson’s “Cassie” readies to take her place in Sony and Marvel’s live-action Spider-Verse this February, but the internet continues to speculate about which Spider-Man belongs inMadame Web’suniverse. During the latest episode ofThe Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider and John Rocha discussed the issue. Sneider prefaced the conversation by saying:

I heard a crazy like rumor, and this is just a rumor.

The crux of the unsubstantiated rumor is that the studio originally intended for Andrew Garfield’s version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man to be the webslinger in theMadame Webfilm. However, that doesn’t mean that Garfield himself was ever approached to actually appear in the movie. Rather, according to the conversation between Sneider and Rocha, there would have possibly been nods to Garfield’s superhero during Cassie Webb’s first big-screen adventure.

Sneider and Rocha go on to reveal that they were under the impression thatMadame Webis set in the 1990s. In fact, though, director S.J. Clarkson has made it clear that her installment in the live-action Spider-Verse takes place in 2003. Based simply on that revelation, it makes much more sense that Tobey Maguire is the Spider-Man ofMadame Web, since the actor’s trilogy as the Marvel superhero was released between 2002 and 2007.

Spider-Man in Madame Web?

Madame Web

During their discussion on the most recent episode ofThe Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider and John Rocha discussed rumors thatMadame Webis set in the 1990s and that Andrew Garfield was the Spider-Man of the upcoming film’s universe. Sneider also revealed that eventually the studio decided to downshift and makeTom Hollandthe webslinger who operates in Cassie Webb’s (Johnson) world. Of course, this makes absolutely no sense now that fans know the upcoming Sony film is set in 2003. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director and co-writer S.J. Clarkson made it quite clear thatMadame Webtakes place in her own world. Clarkson said:

“She’s [Cassie Webb] definitely in a standalone world. I was able to just have free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else. That was a gift, in a way, to be able to take something and bring a fresh and I hope original take to it.”

Fans going intoMadame Weblooking for any ofthe established, friendly neighborhood Spider-Men(Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland) to appear on the screen are setting themselves up for disappointment. As Clarkson alluded to, her film focuses on Cassie.
