When James Gunn was announced as one half of the new team behind the DCU, many fans immediately asked which of his favorite Marvel stars would be following him to DC Studios.Karen Gillanmade it clear that having played Nebula in Gunn’sGuardians of the Galaxymovies, and other MCU films, she would be more than happy to playPoison Ivyin the writer/director’s new venture. It seems that not much has changed, as Gillan recently reiterated her desire to play a specific version of the flora-loving villain.
Back in April 2023, Gillan was asked which DC character she would like to take on if asked to join the DCU. At the time, she said:

“I always thought that Poison Ivy was really fun. So maybe something like that would be cool. Honestly, if James asked me to play an alien that sits in the background of a shot and doesn’t talk, I would say yes [laughs]. Because working with him has been one of the great joys of my career so far.”
Now, while speaking toScreen Rant, Gillan has continued to show her enthusiasm for the role, and expanded on her previous comments when asked if there was a specific version of Ivy that she would like to play. She said:

Oooh. That’s a good question. In a relationship with Harley Quinn sounds excellent.
The first movie that could potentially introduce Poison Ivy in her latest live-action form would most likely beThe Brave and the Bold. The film will see another new actor don the cowl and cape of Batman, and if Gunn’sSupermanis anything to go by, it could feature any number of well-known characters from Batman lore.
Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn Make Quite a Power Couple
From their first appearances in comic book form, the characters ofPoison Ivy and Harley Quinnhave evolved a great deal. While Ivy has continued to be an environmentalist at heart, albeit with some extreme methods of spreading her message, her pairing with the sometimes girlfriend of the Joker has seen recent iterations of the character becoming one half of a new power couple among Gotham’s villainous elite.
Their personal dynamic, which originally took a leap forward around 2016 in comic book canon, has been at the forefront of the R-rated animated seriesHarley Quinn, in which Ivy played a prominent role in Harley’s journey of self-discovery. Their romantic relationship is just one part of the complex union between them, and that is something that has never previously been explored in a live-action project.
Why Margot Robbie Should Leave Harley Quinn Behind
Margot Robbie has played Harley Quinn across three DCEU films but it could be the right time for the actress to leave the role behind.
The animatedHarley Quinnseries has been praised for its representation of the LGBTQ community, and this is something that could easily be translated into the new DCU. Whether this is something that Gunn already has somewhere in a book of notes is unknown, but it looks like he already has one half of that duo ready and waiting in Gillan. Although many fans will be hoping that Margot Robbie makes a return as Harley in the franchise, andGunn has expressed a willingness to work with the Barbie star again, so far it has been neither confirmed nor denied whether this will happen.
Karen Gillan will star in Adam Cooper’sSleeping Dogs, which opens in theaters on March 24.
