MTV’sThe Hillswas partly inspired by Mischa Barton’s hit showThe O.C., so it seems fitting that she has announced she’ll be participating inThe Hillsreboot. While Barton’s old show wasn’t a reality TV series, it inspired MTV to produce 2004’sLaguna Beach: The Real Orange County, one year after the premiere ofThe O.C.The Real Orange County later splintered off intoThe Hills, which ran from 2006 to 2010, and was hugely successful.
The Hillsreboot was announced by MTV in August at the Video Music Awards. The big reveal had fans shocked and excited that they were going to be able to see some of their favorite people from the show in a new time of their lives. The addition of Mischa Barton, who has never had a real connection to the people on the show, has thrown a whole new level of excitement into the mix. Barton had this to say about joiningThe Hillsreboot.
“The secret’s out… I’m joining the cast ofThe Hills. When MTV approached me with the chance to be a part of the reality show that was inspired byThe O.C., it felt like the perfect opportunity for an irresistibly inviting new chapter.”
Mischa Barton will be appearing onThe Hillswith original stars Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Jason Wahler, Frankie Delgado, Justin Bobby Brescia, Stephanie Pratt, Brody Jenner, and Whitney Port. Both Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari have declined to participate in the reboot. Port has revealed that she has tried to get Conrad on board through mutual friends, but she’s working on her clothing line and lifestyle brand instead.
It will be interesting to see Mischa Barton interact with the other stars fromThe Hills. Spencer Pratt recently revealed that he had been praying for Barton’s presence for a long time. While the original version of the show was considered reality TV, it was heavily scripted and a lot of the fights were all fake, according to Whitney Port, who maintains that the reboot will be centered more on reality this time around. Port had this to say.
“There isn’t a need to create storylines this time around, honestly. There’s enough going on in our lives at the moment that they’re not going to have to make anything up. What’s cool about the reboot is it’s going to be a slice-of-life type of show.”
The O.C.ran from 2003 to 2007 and was seen as a pop culture phenomenon during its first and second seasons. However, the ratings started to slip after that. Mischa Barton’s character was killed off at the end of Season 3, which led to a further decline in ratings. The Real Orange County is going to meetThe O.C.inThe Hillsreboot, which starts filming next month.
