Back in September, just days after Netflix’s hit seriesNarcosdebuted, the show wasrenewed for season 2, but we haven’t heard much about the series since then. Netflix hasn’t issued any updates about when the new season will debut. It has been rumored, though, that new episodes will arrive this August, which would be almost exactly one year after the first season premiered.
The show will be undergoing a number of changes, both in front of and behind the camera. Before the first season ended, showrunnerAdam Fierroparted ways with the series, withEric NewmanandJose Padilharemaining on board as executive producers. During an interview with/Film,Eric Newmanteased that Season 2 will showcase the death ofPablo Escobar, played byWagner Moura. Here’s what the producer had to say about the inevitable death of the drug kingpin.
“Trust me, if we could find a way to keep him alive and keep Wagner on the show… He will die. The design of the show is we told 15 years of history in season one. At the point of Escobar’s escape which is the summer of 1992, Escobar has 18 months to live. That’s not something we can change. To stretch that out beyond another season would be disingenuous of us. That story was always designed to have an ending.”
With Pablo Escobar’s story coming to an end, many are wondering how many seasons the show could last, without thisiconic character. There isn’t much that is known about howPablo Escobar’s death will be handled, or how the show will continue in his absence.Eric Newmanwouldn’t offer any specifics aboutSeason 3or beyond, but he’s confident that they’ll be able to tell compelling stories.
“There are any number of things that can happen after. We have not committed to one or the other. Obviously there are a lot of other stories in this world that continue on beyond him. In some ways, for me, what they’ve done withHomelandafter losingDamian Lewisafter season three is sort of amazing. To tell you the truth, most of my thinking is about season two because we’re in the middle of it and I haven’t thought that much about where do we go from here. I just want the best version of season two.”
AfterAdam Fierroleft the series as showrunner, Netflix made the surprising move to not hire a replacement, leaving bothEric NewmanandJose Padilhaon board as executive producers. Despite the lack of a traditional showrunner,Eric Newmanrevealed that production actually hasn’t changed that much between this season and the first. Here’s what he had to say below.
“The first season was such a joy working in Colombia. Production hasn’t changed that much. The first season was a lot of information, a lot of setup. We need to tell you about this world. Now that we’re in the world, we can spend more time with the people in the world and the characters. So I would say that season two is more character driven. Less voiceover I hope. Really José and I have still maintained control of the show. We had a great partner last year inChris Brancatoand then we began the season with a great writing partner who did what we had hoped he would do, which was helped focus us. The show is exactly what we want it to be and very much takes into consideration what we felt worked last season, and areas we wanted to improve on a production basis. It is very much the show we want.”
As for the release date,Netflixstill hasn’t confirmed the rumored August date for Season 2, so stay tuned for more updates on this new season ofNarcos. It isn’t known if filming has already wrapped onNarcos, or when we may see the first Season 2 trailer at this time. Hopefully we’ll learn more about the death of Pablo Escobar and the possibilities for Season 3 and beyond very soon.
