After several years of development, theLost in SpaceTV reboot is finally happening, with thestreaming serviceNetflix picking up the series earlier this year. The show is currently set for a 2018 premiere date, and today we have word that the series will flip the script with an iconic role. Netflix has brought onParker Poseyfor the role of Dr. Smith, which has been played by a man in the first two iterations of this story.

Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, issued a 10-episode series order for the first season of the one-hour sci-fi drama, from Legendary TV, based on the beloved 1960’s sci-fi classic fromIrwin Allen. The show is reimagined by feature writing team ofMatt SazamaandBurk Sharpless, whose writing credits includeDracula UntoldandThe Last Witch Hunter. They also wrote the epic action adventureGods of Egyptwhich hit theaters this year, and the upcomingPower Rangers, which hits theaters on July 18, 2025.Zack Estrin(Prison Break) is serving as the showrunner. The series will premiere worldwide on Netflix in 2018. Legendary TV also recently picked up the rights toDunefor a film and TV series, but it remains to be seen if they will partner with Netflix for this property, like they did withLost in Space.
Taking its cues from the original series, the show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama andsci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages.

Netflix has yet to cast the Robinson family’s youngest daughter Penny, played byLacey Chabertin the 1998 movie and byAngela Cartwrightin theoriginal series, and Major Don West, who was played byMatthew Perryin the movie andMark Goddardin the TV series.
