Last week, fans got finally got story details and the first photos fromStranger Things Season 2, including confirmation that all-new episodes will premiere on Halloween. The premiere will find these young friends in Hawkins, Indiana dressed up as theGhostbusters. None of those photos featured any of the new characters. But today we have our first look at Max, a young tomboy who will befriend the boys, played bySadie Sink. The image also featuresWinona Ryderas a distraught Joyce Byers, asNoah Schapp’s Will Byers andGaten Matarazzo’s Dustin Henderson look on.
Netflixdebuted this latest image today, along with six other images that already premiered through Entertainment Weekly’s coverage of the show last week. It’s not clear why Joyce Byers is so worked up in this photo, nor what roleSadie Sink’s Max plays here. Max was teased in a casting breakdown last year, with the actress hired in October, along withDacre Montgomeryas her step-brother Billy. Unlike the main group of kids in Hawkins, who get around town by riding their bikes, Max is a skater girl, described as tough and confident with a complicated past. She is said to be very suspicious of anyone who surrounds her in life.
Series co-creatorMatt Dufferrevealed last week that both Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) will be “vying” for Max’s romantic attention this season, creating an innocent love triangle of sorts. Her step-brother Billy, on the other hand, will serve as the show’s ‘human villain’. Billy is described as edgy and overly confident, whose hobbies include stealing girlfriends away from their longtime boyfriends, drinking games and driving his black Camaro. He is described as having a ‘violent and unpredictable nature.’ It remains to be seen if any of this violence is aimed at his step-sister, or at the other youngsters in Hawkins.
Series co-creatorMatt Dufferhas also teased that this season will explore “different kinds of horror,” with the connection to the Upside Down still open. The Demogorgon is actually destroyed, but the Upside Down still remains, so we’ll have to wait and see if any other creatures emerge from this mysterious place. It has also been reported that Will Byers has visions of the Upside Down, after he was seen coughing up a nasty slug at the end of Season 1. TheHawkins, Indianalab is now being run by Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser), who is described as “seemingly friendly.” Other new characters includeSean Astinas a local Radio Shack manager who went to high school with both Joyce and Sheriff Hopper (David Harbour), and who has started dating Joyce.
Netflix previously released the titles for all nine episodes inStranger ThingsSeason 2, but theDuffer Brothersrevealed that some of those titles will change. During a recent interview,Matt Duffersaid that he has seen videos online analyzing the episode titles, and a lot of them have been “right on the money” with their theories about this season. It remains to be seen when the new titles will be unveiled, or if fans will be able to glean any story details from them. With 10 months left between now and the premiere ofStranger ThingsSeason 2, we’ll have to wait and see how much more information will be released.
