‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Finally Gets an Official Release Date in Tantalizing New Look At HBO Series
New details have dropped for the upcoming second season of HBO’s award-winning video game adaptation
Joe Pantoliano will be playing Eugene, a character mentioned at the start of the secondThe Last of Usvideo game but who is never seen on-screen. Ellie and Dina come across his cannabis farm during the first act, shortly before the stomach-turning event that kicks offPart IIwith an emotional gut punch. Neil Druckmann teased that, much like the first season expanded Bill and Frank’s storyline to award-winning results, they saw an opportunity to do the same with Eugene. This time, it will serve as a point of development for Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced).

“I get excited when I see these opportunities. I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Eugene that well!’ The story we told [in the game] was somewhat superficial. The way this character comes in really gets to the heart of Joel and Ellie and their relationship.”
‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Star Teases That Gut-Wrenching Emotional Moment
Ellie will be spending a significant portion ofThe Last of UsSeason 2, as the five-year leap after the finale sees the father-daughter duo estranged from each other. Bella Ramsey will get in on the action far more than they did last time around as Ellie goes on another nationwide journey. However, according to Ramsey, prepping for the emotional scenes of the second season proved to be the most taxing.
In what they described as “the darkest scene this season,” Ramsey recalled listening to “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” as an unconventional means of digging deep into their emotions.

“I was on the floor, my eyes absolutely burning with these menthol tears, and I’m just saying, ‘Peanut Butter Jelllll-y. You’ll probably be able to tell which one that is when you watch it.”
Those who have playedThe Last of Us Part IIknow exactly which scene Ramsey is talking about. Without spoiling, it seems the HBO adaptation is sticking with its guns to faithfully portray the game’s deeply provocative storyline. There will bedistinct changesmade from the game for Season 2, but as Druckmann teased, fans should brace themselves for impact.

“I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.”
