2019 is going to be the biggest year yet when it comes to Netflix original movies and TV shows, and they are kicking the new year off with a bang quite literally. Today, we have the first trailer and poster for the action thrillerClosestarring Naomi Rapace, which will launch exclusively on the premium streaming service this month.

Closeisn’t wasting anytime from showing off its first trailer to its debut, with the hard-hitting drama arriving onNetflixin just the next two weeks, debuting Friday, January 18. The window between when they show off their next big release and when it actually arrives is shrinking by the minute, to appease the ‘gotta have it now’ culture they’ve helped create.

Closeis an adrenaline-pumping action thriller written and directed by Vicky Jewson (Born of War). The drama is inspired by the life of the world’s leading female bodyguard, Jacquie Davis. The film starsNoomi Rapaceas Sam, a counter-terrorist expert used to war zones, who takes on the job of protecting Zoe (Sophie Nelisse), a young and rich heiress, a babysitting job for her. But a violent attempted kidnapping forces the two to go on the run. Now they’ve got to take some lives, or lose theirs.

DirectorVicky Jewsonmade her directorial debut in 2008 with the horror romanceLady Godivaat just the age of 21. She followed that up in 2014 with the war torn revenge dramaBorn of War.Closewill be her third feature, having written or collaborated on all the scripts for her previous movies. She is also working on the TV seriesCrumbs.

The story inCloseis a fictionalized account of real-life bodyguard Jacquie Davis, who counts J.K. Rowling, Nicole Kidman, and members of the British royal family as some of her high profile clients. Davis served as a consultant on the movie, and worked closely with Rapace in bringing her onscreen persona to life on the big screen. Rapace said this to Entertainment Weekly about working with the bodyguard on the movie, who trained in London with The Circuit, a British organization for close protection officers.

“I’ve always been so fascinated by female bodyguards. I was obsessed with their world and how good they are at leading people and blending in and basically not taking up any space. They’re behind you or in front of you, but they walk with you. It’s almost like a dance. It’s just a very intriguing, kind of hidden and secretive world.”

Noomi Rapace made a name for herself around the world when she starred as Lisbeth Salander in the originalGirl with the Dragon Tattootrilogy. She has gone onto take quite a few prominent roles in big Hollywood movies, starring in the Alien prequelPrometheusand theSherlock HolmessequelGame of Shadowsopposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. She says this about her new character Sam.

[She] would die for the people she protects, but she also has a lot of ghosts from her past that she’s not really dealing with, and she doesn’t have a lot of personal relationships. She doesn’t let people in."

Closeis just one of hundreds of new movies that will be streaming on Netflix in the next twelve months, but it’s already gaining a strong reputation as one of the biggest releases action fans simply can’t miss.
