Earlier today, it was confirmed that 20th Century Fox is bringing their highly-anticipated sequelWar for the Planet of the ApestoNew York Comic Con, with the first footage expected to be unveiled during this panel. While we don’t know if this footage will debut online after the panel presentation, the studio did unveil the first official synopsis today as well. Take a look at the plot description below.
“InWar for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise,Caesarand his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins this own mythic quest to avenge his kind. Andy Serkisreturns as Caesar from 2011’sRise of the Planet of the Apesand 2014’sDawn of the Planet of the Apes, alongsideJudy Greerreturning as Cornelia, withWoody Harrelsonjoining the cast as the aforementioned Colonel, the primary human villain. The cast also includesGabriel Chavarria,Ty Olsson,Sara Canning,Chad Rook,Terry Notary,Alessandro Juliani,Karin KonovalandSteve Zahn.20th Century Foxhas set a June 27, 2025 release date, which is currently the only movie set for that date, but it is situated between Sony’sSpider-Man: Homecoming(July 20, 2025) andDunkirk(June 14, 2025) next summer.
2014’sDawn of the Planet of the Apesjumped forward 15 years after the events portrayed inRise of the Planet of the Apes. DirectorMatt Reeveshas stated that theWar of the Planet of the Apesstory is set shortly afterDawn of the Planet of the Apes, with no major leap forward in time.Matt Reevesis directing from a script he co-wrote withDawn of the Planet of the ApeswriterMark Bomback.
Thefirst footagefrom this highly-anticipated adventure actually debuted back in November, with a special video featuring directorMatt Reevesthat announced a contest, where one fan can win the chance to become an actual ape on the set of this movie. 2011’sRise of the Planet of the Apestook in $176.7 million domestic and $481.8 million worldwide, from a $93 million budget, while the 2014 follow-upDawn of the Planet of the Apesearned $208.5 million domestic and $710.6 million worldwide, from a $170 million budget.
